Second children do everything later, because they have an older sister and mum around to wait on them.

My youngest didn't talk to anyone but her sister until she was nearly 4 - I had all sorts of do gooding people trying to poke their nose in, but I wasn't concerned.

The mum is best placed to decide what is best for her child.

Some children never crawl or cruise, they go straight from sitting to walking almost overnight.

I hope your friend is making the most of these times, once she starts walking she'll be running her ragged!

  • Definitely think she's ok. There's a little boy at the baby group I take my daughter to - he didn't crawl til well after 17 months. He just wasn't interested. Soon after he started crawling he started walking. Everyone just does things in their own time, but good on you for looking out for your friend and her child.

My oldest and third children didn't walk until 18 months - my third child didn't stand alone until well past 14 months of age. My second walked at 11 months and my fourth at 10 months. Huge range of development ages but I wasn't worried about any of them at any point.

If you take a look at page 65 of the link below it shows a chart of "normal" development: http://webarchive.nationalarchives.gov.uk/+/www.dh.gov.uk/prod_consum_dh/groups/dh_digitalassets/@dh/@en/@ps/@sta/@perf/documents/digitalasset/dh_117167.pdf

Some children develop later because of problems; my friend's son didn't walk until he was over the age of two due to prematurity. I can remember going to his first birthday party and he couldn't sit unaided.

The only thing I would say about your friend's child is that baby-walkers really are a bad idea. They don't help with walking at all as the child does not learn to support their own weight properly and they also encourage the legs to be positioned incorrectly for walking. They are also the leading cause of accidents in infants. If I had my way they would be banned.

Does she 'feel her feet' stand with her weight on mum's lap holding hands. I think if she wasn't even doing that I would be concerned.

Crawling is not a milestone as not all children do it.

Out of group of friends 4 babies one walked at 9mths didn't crawl. One crawled 11mths n walked 18mths. One walked 15mths didn't crawl. Other being mine cruised from 9mths didn't walk independently til 18mth crawled at 14mths. If u ever saw the latter 3 together even at 9/10mths would pop them on playmates together yep some rolling otherwise stayed there!!

All babies are different would be concerned if she had to be propped up because she cannot sit unaided
  • My first crawled when expected and walked at 13 months. My second is almost 16 months and isn't walking. She discovered bum shuffling a couple of months ago and transport-wise I think this will do her for now! She enjoys walking with an adult holding both hands but her centre of gravity is so hopeless it'll be a while before she'll be able to do it without help. That said, she's saying more at this point than my first was so clearly we all have our strengths. According my mum I was 21 months when I walked so I think she's taking after me. :)

It doesn't worry me that she's delayed because she's not going to be 16 and still not walking so she's going to get it at some point!

If they bum shuffle they tend to walk later as they have a hand free and are upright (IYSWIM). They don't feel the need to walk so much.

Walking, crawling at different ages if no concern but if the babe can't support their own weight on their legs I'd get it checked out by the health visitor.

My daughter is 15 months and doesn't crawl or walk either (she bum shuffles). Some babies just don't crawl and they are normally late walkers. It might not be the norm but its nothing to worry about.

My nephew didn't walk until he was about 20 months but I think his mum tended to carry him around a lot. He was still carried up and down the stairs when he was 3! He does also have a much older sister (10 years or more older) and I think she liked to baby him :)

Friend's little girl was walking by about 10 months, I think she wanted to keep up with her big brother :)

They are all different. My little boy didn't really talk until just after the age of 2, now it's a rare time if he's quiet :)
