Congratulations on your marriage. Wouldn't imagine going across the Irish sea when pregnant wouldn't be great fun for your wife, if the crossing was rough. Think London would be wiser & probably cheaper than Dublin.

It means I probably have a more accurate view of Dublin that one seen through the bottom of a pint glass in Temple Bar that unsuspecting tourists think is authentic Ireland.;)

Lol, I love it how you describe my experience of Dublin as if its fact and don't even know me, pretty sad. Anyway, as said before buddy, walk on and spread your hate for Dublin elsewhere. :)

Plan is to go to the zoo, see a show and probably go to Ripleys and fit some shopping in somewhere (my wife needs some maternity clothes!). Can anyone recommend anywhere else to go? I'm not good with heights so avoiding the London eye!

    Couple of thoughts for you:

If you're near the big department stores in the West End, you could try and pop to see the John Lewis roof garden — it's part of their 150th anniversary stuff.

But my best tip would be — as you'll be here on a weekday — that you'll find some of London's best restaurants do brilliant lunchtime deals. You can get some inspiration here but loads of restaurants have set lunches at good prices.

It's won't be cheap in absolute terms (think £30 per person or so), but compared to the evening prices these offers can be a real bargain.

You might struggle for a reservation at the most popular places, but it's still worth a go if you want a special meal without spending a total fortune.

    Enjoy your trip!

Just curious why you agree with what he says about Dublin? What areas of Dublin do you visit? Dublin is a safe city, and you dont openly see a drug culture like Tom describes. I feel way safer in Dublin than in London, and see way more evidence of drug and crime there. I am no way slating London, just comparing the two :).

    Hi all,

Got married last week and we are looking for a mini moon for wednesday to saturday as my wife is pregnant and don't want anything too strenuous. We are planning to go away for a proper honeymoon once the littlen is old enough.

Anyway we can't/don't want to fly so was hoping for ideas. We've been looking at loads of different ferry companies for Dublin but they're all asking for over £300? How come its so expensive? Am i just looking in the wrong place? I could get a return to calais for like £80 or less.

If we can't get it for less than 140 or so i think its easier to just go to London as the price difference in travel would essentially cover the accommodation.

Not a huge fan of driving in Europe so saw Dublin as an ideal solution as it would be minimal driving.

London has plenty to do, were considering seeing the Lion King show (any tips on tickets? cheapest i can find is about £50 each). Then we would do the zoo and other amusements. I was trying to get clubcard tokens but apparently they post them? Does anyone know if you can get around this in store?

Sorry for all the questions. Look forward to your responses.

    Many thanks,
    James

Time Out has been the definitive guide to London for decades and it's online version is an invaluable source for what to do,where to go and how to score cheap eats and theatre deals.

Enjoy and congratulations by the way.

Ferries across the Irish Sea are expensive because only two companies sail the route and, surprise surprise, their fares are almost always identical.
As a destination Dublin really is the pits. Hugely expensive with little to see or do other than a trip round the Guinness brewery or vomit-dodging in Temple Bar.
The inner city also has a big crime problem fuelled by a serious heroin epidemic and an under-resourced and over-stretched corrupt police force.
London on the other hand is the greatest city in the world.

im regretting buying those plane tickets now... supposed to go for the aug bank holiday

lol, you'll have a great time.

I went to Dublin for a long weekend earlier in the year and really enjoyed myself.

Did the red tourist bus, Guinness brewery, Jameson distillery, wax museum, wandered around the town...Had some great food, met some really friendly people and even stayed in the vomit ridden Temple Bar and didn't get raped, beaten on injected with anything - according to Tom I beat the odds!

Its not so much a rape (a terrible word applying to a horrific crime) but a financial screwing.

If you left Dublin alive - You were screwed. And likely by more than one person, which may or may not be a bad thing.
