Dublin vs London

Hi all,
Got married last week and we are looking for a mini moon for wednesday to saturday as my wife is pregnant and don't want anything too strenuous. We are planning to go away for a proper honeymoon once the littlen is old enough.
Anyway we can't/don't want to fly so was hoping for ideas. We've been looking at loads of different ferry companies for Dublin but they're all asking for over £300? How come its so expensive? Am i just looking in the wrong place? I could get a return to calais for like £80 or less.
If we can't get it for less than 140 or so i think its easier to just go to London as the price difference in travel would essentially cover the accommodation.
Not a huge fan of driving in Europe so saw Dublin as an ideal solution as it would be minimal driving.
London has plenty to do, were considering seeing the Lion King show (any tips on tickets? cheapest i can find is about £50 each). Then we would do the zoo and other amusements. I was trying to get clubcard tokens but apparently they post them? Does anyone know if you can get around this in store?
Sorry for all the questions. Look forward to your responses.
Many thanks,
James
Ferries across the Irish Sea are expensive because only two companies sail the route and, surprise surprise, their fares are almost always identical.
As a destination Dublin really is the pits. Hugely expensive with little to see or do other than a trip round the Guinness brewery or vomit-dodging in Temple Bar.
The inner city also has a big crime problem fuelled by a serious heroin epidemic and an under-resourced and over-stretched corrupt police force.
London on the other hand is the greatest city in the world.0 -
If you dont mind taking the train, there can be some great deals to be had on the ferry. But if you want to take the car, then thats not an option. Its ashame Dublin is so expensive to get to by ferry. If it were me, and could afford it, i would def do Dublin, especially if you want a laid back time in a city. But I do not like London as a city, been there many times, and also Dublin many times. But hey, thats my personal opinion

There are some cheap deals to Dublin including UK train travel - London to Dublin from £38. Seat 61 has all of the details.

I did London to Dublin by train and ferry when I was a student. Never again. It took forever.0 -
Off the back of millions of reviews/votes London is 3rd on the best destinations list on Trip Advisor behind Istanbul and Rome (it's hard to argue with either of those)

Dublin unsurprisingly doesn't make the list.
Not arguing. Just disagree.:)0 -

Haha!!! What a load of nonsense.... Are you Boris Johnson in disguise or something? Desperate for people to go to London

I also dissagree with him. What a ridiculous statement, why would you expect dublin to be up there with the likes of Beijing, New York etc. as a top world destination..... Just because it isnt in that list, doesnt make it a rubbish place to go. Its a great place to go, the people are also really friendly (no chance of getting that in London), there is plenty of things to do, a great laugh. But its a small city, so to compare it to the likes of London is mental...0 -

It's clearly not mental to compare them... Whether Dublin should be expected to be able to compete is utterly irrelevant to a tourist.
You will also find thousands of nice and friendly people in London. Though the people who say this stuff normally act as if they are morally superior, you are no different to the people who say stuff like "the North is a dump" etc.0 -

Even my friends that live in London always say about it not being as friendly in general as other cities, they notice it when visting other cities. And of course there are thousands of nice people there, I know a lot of nice people there, but I am talking in general. Anyway, it is more relevant to say that, than to diss a city like Dublin because it does not compete with the likes of New York in review sites. I love Dublin, but I would not vote it up next to those other cities.
I like both, it just depends what you are looking for I suppose. If like the OP, was looking for a break that wasnt too strenuous, then I would choose Dublin, as its smaller, and a much more relaxed atmosphere.0
