Same for me, my policy autorenews (so I don't have to ring them @ £500 a minute )

My policy ends at the of this month, I will do quotes but if I find it cheaper (depending how much), then I will have to ring those 0870/0845 from my mobile :( to cancel.

    Auto renewals

Aye, it was more out of hope than expectation that there would be no break on the database. I'm sure there must be a logical explanation for why auto-renewals appear OK, but new policies don't.

Thanks for confirming that carrying the certificate should suffice in the interim.

Wouldnt there be a break on the database anyway as you were uninsured for a day between midnight on the 31st and midnight on the 1st.

I am not sure why you would want to check tho. I have never felt the need

Some police forces make more effort to remove uninsured drivers from the road than others. If you live in such an area or have some common sense you will realise that switching insurers and renewal times and when changes are made are when mistakes occur so you could end up uninsured according to the MID through no fault of your own. Insurers make mistakes. One letter wrong in your registration and you're not insured.

This is why it is sensible to check at these times. Watchdog had a load of people on it who lost or nearly lost their cars due to insurers either taking ages to put them on the MID or screwing up changes.

Insurance ends at 23.59 normally. So the new policy should have started at 00:01 on the 1st so a theoretical break of 2 minutes.

    Jeez, I was being sarcastic.

Do you honestly not see why someone would want to check the insurance database the day their new policy starts?

No, one policy ended at 23.59 on the 31st and the other started at 00.01 on the 1st.

Anyway, I'm now showing as insured so all is good.

I'm still not, just checked, so fired off an email to stir them up hopefully.

Paying for the phonecall is a very last resort: probably Wednesday.
I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

No I don't because I know I will have proof written that I am insured, so it wouldn't cross my mind to ever look.

Unless you intend to keep a copy of your insurance certificate on you every time you want to drive anywhere, it's a good idea to check that you are on the MID.

If you are on the database, the police won't stop you if you pass an ANPR car. If you're not, then you'd better make sure you have that insurance certificate handy. If you forgot, then your car could be off to the pound, and you'd be walking home.

It only takes a minute or so to check the web site to see if you're on the database, and it could save a lot of hassle. I always check a few days after I take out a new insurance policy.
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.
