Splitting the bills? Is anything other than 50/50 unfair?

Just have a joint account and put everything into the same pot.
Or would that be unthinkable?0 -
Hello everyone,
Cor blimey! I am surprised by the amount of the replies. Thanks everyone for taking the time to add your 2p's worth. It's been really helpful.
I have already chatted to my other half (I did the next day), sometimes I just need to sound out an idea to make sure I'm not being unreasonable before I do.
Before I posted we had discussed finances in a lot of detail in terms of what everything is going to cost, what can we afford, what happens if I/he lose our employment, how much we can save a month after bills. I presumed we were putting in 50/50 each as this is how we have always paid for everything. It turn out he didn't. We both know what the other one earns and he didn't expect me to be 'asking him to buy me a chinese at the weekend' (his words).0 -
So what's the arrangement going to be?0

Wouldn't work for us.

When we move we are putting all of our money together (about £2.7k a month). Once all the bills are paid we will split what's left over 50/50 (about £350 each) and can do with it as we wish (we've already agreed on savings and the like)
I'm the higher earner but I wouldn't feel right splitting everything 50/50 because I would have almost double left at the end of the month and it's not like my OH is too lazy to get a higher paid job.
EDIT
The money for bills will go in a joint account and we will keep our own accounts as well. Our Rainbow Twins born 17th April 2016

And I'm sorry but women DO do most of the housework and childcare: always have, always will, and men will almost always be the higher earners. People can deny that if they like. It's still true.Totally agree. I think that's what I meant by it depends on the circles you move in.Buzzybee90 wrote: »So basically what you mean is the plebs combine finances whilst the educated remain separate but that's only true in cases you know, it's not in cases I know! It's completely down to personal choice and I don't think it has anything to do with the "circles" people supposedly move in.
For fear of causing a national incident, I didn't use the word plebs.
Another poster wondered if it might be an age thing. I don't know.
All I'm suggesting is that there are people around who believe that men will always be the higher earners and women will always do the lions share of the housework and childcare. I don't agree with that. I also expressed my disappointment that after all the moves towards equality in education, employment etc. that buzzybee should think like that as I believe that just perpetuates the status quo. She's obviously basing it on her own experience and that of the people she mixes with. I'm doing the same, whatever labels you give us.0 -

It wasn't me that said I believe women do most of the housework/ earn less, it was Jaylee. As I said, I'm not basing anything on personal experience other than that I share money with my partner and it works very well. My parents do, all my older friends & family members.
You don't know me, but the people I mix with are quite well off & educated. Or are you implying that you mix with the *andrewmitchellgates*?
Thought not.0 -

Many apologies. It was, of course, jaylee who said that. What disappointed me was that she seemed to think it would never change.0
