No you wouldnt as thats what you pay for in taxes. What you have pay for is for example if your car gets stolen and it is recovered, you pay the cost of having the car stored.

Perhaps if you cant stand people having a difference of opinion to you then you shouldnt post a "screw up" on an OPEN Forum.

I shall continue to post my opinion on the matter as i see fit

I wonder whether this type of recovery and storage differs from area to area, and whether the police receive any kind of income from private companies that operate storage facilities?

On the two occasions I've had a vehicle taken, the police have found it and I've been phoned and asked to collect, no mention of recovery and storage by anyone. On one of the occasions, I was rung at 5am and told my car was blocking the entrance to some garages about 10 minutes away and people wanted to get their cars out. When I pointed out my car was parked outside on the road they patiently waited on the phone while I shuffled to the window, realised it had been nicked and shuffled back. The second time I had to get it scrapped because joy riders blew up the engine and cracked the sump, making replacements and repairs worth more than the car.

Personally, I don't believe the police should go ahead and make arrangements for storing a recovered vehicle unless they cannot get hold of the owner and have absolutely no choice in the matter. Most owners will move heaven and earth to retrieve their car quickly under the cirumstances and that should be the first option.

thats pretty sad butlers, i came here for advice not to have an arrogant big head post replys to get his daily fix of supperiority.
i also find it rich that on a site where we are encouraged to take huge companies to court for refunds of sums of money similair to my £105, i am getting so much discouragement to try and save on this.
i ask you this then mr "im not a lawyer im a financial advisor"...say i cant pay the £105, my cars a write-off, and the garage that store the car cant even salvage £105 scrap value to redeem their costs....am i now a criminal?

and for the record, im not after peoples differnce of opinion, im after ADVICE.

upon further investigation, from "helpfull" people over at CAG, i found info stating that in certain districts , police cover theyre own costs of storage and uplifts, only in the cases that they see fit to store the vehicle for their own needs ( finger prints ).
can i use this as a example to force this police district to pay-up?

insurance is a very precise artfrom...if i claim the cost of storage ( which i cant ) it will lose my no claims bonus( which is more than £105 ) my insurance will go up ( more than £105 ).Do i want the car fingerprinted...NO! not at a cost of £105 and the loss of my car for over a week.
I believe the police have to legally 'place' the car in a secure, protected compond after theft. That's a legal requirement. They don't have the resources so private companies provide this facility - and charge for it.

.i pay my taxes, i fund the police.
This isn't a bill from the police - it's from the private storage company.

maybe the negative replys are from people that have not been victims of crime before?
I had this same scenario. Tbh I didn't know beforehand about the storage fee. In my case it didn't make any difference - there was a claim because the toerags had trashed the engine and damaged bodywork, so the £ 105 was just added to the claim. If it had been undamaged, I would have just paid the fee and not made a claim. It would have been annoying but cost effective.

so its not enough that after being the victim of crime, im made to bare the cost and the burdon of it, i also have small minded ppl on this forum trying to make me feel guilty.
Bottom line is - the police aren't making you spend this money - the toerag who stole the car has cost you this.

so lets say i cant afford £105. The garage will then have to take me to court to reclaim theiross of £105....does that make me a criminal?
Yes the garage would sue for the money. You've done nothing wrong but it's costing you money - but it's not the fault of the police, it's all been caused by the little **** who nicked your car.

I'm pretty sure you can't legally challenge this.

I wonder how the Police go about deciding which storage facility they send people's cars to. Do they shop around for the most competitive or do they have 'other' means of selecting their preferred provider.

I appreciated upon discovering the car the police become responsible for it's safe keeping, but you would hope they would try and contact the owner before having it towed away (assuming it is driveable) and running up a bill for the owner.

You have to wonder if it is only a matter of time before the police start charging for the return of other stolen goods. Seems like a nice little earner....Mr Plod recovers said stolen goods. Takes it back to the station and sticks it in the lock up. A few days later finds owner and gives him a call. Come and collect your items and please bring your cheque book or credit card, we charge £50/night for items recovered and held by us plus a one off £10 admin fee. Please park round the back of the station in our Pay-and-Display carpark (£5/hour, be warned there is a charge of £50 for not purchasing a parking ticket or your car may be towed away).

What a wonderful world we live in.
