hi, i had my car stolen last week....by the time i realised it was gone, the police had allready retreived it and organised for it to be towed away to storage pending finger printing...but now i cant get my car back because the garage that retreived it want £105 storage fee that the police will not pay...help me please moneysavingexperts......surely the police should pay this £105 as if they said "we found your car" i would of said, "im not paying £105, ill just take the car away my self, you want to fingerprint it, you pay".
why must the victim allways end up worst off?
PS: i tryed to add a huge ? after the word screw up as some ppl have taken offence to me referring tothe police screwwing up, so the ? denotas a question, not an allegation.

Pls be nice to all MSer's
There's no such thing as a stupid question, and even if you disagree courtesy helps.

There was a poor lady in my local paper that went on holiday and came back to find her car gone but was pleased to see a note from the police saying it had been recovered. However like you when she called the storage yard she was told there was a £490 release fee! As already advised unfortunately it's down to either your insurance to pay or you.0
-
If the police paid for everyone's car to be stored or recovered they would soon be broke. It's what you pay your insurance for - its a bit tough when you're a victim of crime but we can't really expect the police to foot the bill and they are fingerprinting it in an attempt to catch the offenders.0

If the police paid for everyone's car to be stored or recovered WE would soon be broke, as the Police are funded out by the taxpayersWarning ..... I'm a peri-menopausal axe-wielding maniac0 -

why should the police have to bear the costs? am sure they have already spent enough finding your car & taking it to the storage place? i don't understand people with your mentality - you wish you'd have said 'you want to fingerprint it, you pay'???? it's your car - it was stolen, be grateful that they are investigating the stolen car for you, the police are underfunded & overworked already, i'm sure your attitude hardly helps - it's not a police !!!! up but yours if you don't have the insurance to pay for thisnothing to see here, move along...0 -
Police screw up
Could you explain to us MSE's where they screwed up?
Was it that they found your car safely?
Or
because the retrived it?
Or
Because they want to find the person that stole it?
I think you should be grateful that they have found it and contact your insurance company or just pay it yourself.
Imagine the post if they hadnt found your car!
Police screw up as they cant find my stolen car0 -
I think your being too harsh on daveturney
So the Police found the vehicle - thats their job !! we pay taxes don't we to fund them
There have been quite a lot of complaints about this recently in the media
http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/uk/crime/article1654994.eceten with the Police taking vehicles straight to the storage yard even when no fingerprinmting is to be done and failing to notify the owner for several days thus incurring storage fees.
It is a lot of money that could be avoided if they notify the owner sooner or allow them to pick up the cars from where they are found
Insurance don't normally pay out for these costs so the victiom of the crime has to pay
What if its a nurse who had her car stolen and then having to pay upwards of hundreds of pounds to get back !!!
Absolute scandel0 -

Why a nurse? we arent being harsh at all, the OP is expecting us to fund the costs, its just one of those things that happens0 -

But its one of those things that shouldn't happen
You don't pay to collect recovered items stolen from your house so why should you pay for your car
The OP should make a complaint to the Chief Constable in the first instance and yes should get his money back from this incompetence. The Police should have given the option to pick up the vehicle from its location
Why a Nurse ? - because those who defended the police action should realise the impact of such costs on other low income public sector workers who do just as valuable job as the Police0 -
what a bunch of terrible replies ( apart from 1 ).....
insurance is a very precise artfrom...if i claim the cost of storage ( which i cant ) it will lose my no claims bonus( which is more than £105 ) my insurance will go up ( more than £105 ).
Do i want the car fingerprinted...NO! not at a cost of £105 and the loss of my car for over a week.
And please...i asked for legal advice so if you dont want to help me out, why not just not answer at all.....i pay my taxes, i fund the police.
maybe the negative replys are from people that have not been victims of crime before?
so its not enough that after being the victim of crime, im made to bare the cost and the burdon of it, i also have small minded ppl on this forum trying to make me feel guilty.
so lets say i cant afford £105. The garage will then have to take me to court to reclaim theiross of £105....does that make me a criminal?Chasing up on: Barclaycard closed account 1K +
