All you have to do, is be polite and say, No Thanks. Anyone who offers to pack your bags, just say, No I like doing it myself.
They are usually little kids, who are there trying to raise funds for their local scout hall/dance school/special school. They are not armed robbers, out to slice you apart, to get your money !
Anyone offended by these charity collectors, do have an alternative, online shopping for groceries.
Some of them don't take 'no thank you' for an answer though. Last year, myself and DH were going through the tills and one of the adults with the kids started shoving our stuff into bags. We only had our card on us to pay, so I said to the lady 'It's ok, we'll do it ourselves, we haven't any change to give you' and she just ignored us and carried on. I had to explain again that we would do it ourselves, and, if she had the ability to do so, she would have turned me to stone with the look she gave me. My car only has a small boot too, so I like to have a system of packing to make sure it all goes in.
It wasn't only us, there was an older fella complaining on the next till to another adult that there were kids just throwing his groceries into the bags without any care. Poor fella was swamped with about 5 kids fighting over his shopping to get it in bags.
You don't mind them trying to raise a few quid, but they should ask first if you want help before pawing your shopping.BEST EVER WINS WON IN ORDER (so far) = Sony Camcorder, 32" lcd telly, micro ipod hifi, Ipod Nano, Playstation 3, Andrex Jackpup, Holiday to USA, nintendo wii, Liverpool vs Everton tickets, £250 Reward Your thirst, £500 Pepsi, p&o rotterdam trip, perfume hamper, Dr Who stamp set, steam cleaner.

Our local air cadets do the bag packing in the local stores, M&S have never responded to a request, Sainsbury usually ask us to go in, Asda and Tesco usually say yes when we ask if we can go in. We do it for both the cadets and for the British Legion (that;s usually late October early November)
The cadets have been told not to harass people, and they respect that, we have even had people writing to the local paper commenting on how well behaved they are and such like.
It does raise a lot of much needed money for trips, equipment etc and raises the profile of the cadets.0 -

Who actually uses words like posh and toffs?
It's inverted snobbery which is no better than the other type.
I am I little abrupt with people who talk to me about charity donations. I stop them before they get in full flow and say" does this involve direct debit? I don't do that"0 -
In fairness to the OP, that post was way back in 2007 when interest rates were high.
After the financial crash a couple of years later, the OP would not be getting anywhere near as much interest to live off from his £100K.
However, the OP's first post is unclear exactly who he means by 'chuggers'.
I would not call the young people who offer to pack your bags at the till 'chuggers'.
I have no idea why the OP feels he has to 'endure' chuggers in his local Asda.
Why can't he simply say 'No thank you'?
It's all a rant in a teacup imho.
I think most on here are not posting about chuggers.
If I am approached (have never been approached in a supermarket) I just say NO ! they dont get a thank you, why would you thank one of them. Or just ignore0 -
I have some sympathy with chuggers (not all of them)
Where we live a lot of them appear to be students from the local uni. Often they are sucked into these "jobs" with the promise of X amount of OTE (which is virually impossible to reach). I think they are so deperate for work they just do it, but don't last long.
I do, however, find them incredibly annoying. I'm 25 so they are not much younger than me but there is something about the false happy clappy "i'm your best mate" approach they take that I absolutely hate.
The one's I have no sympathy for are the ones that will persue you down the high street - a few months back one actually follow a women for a good 200 metres and actually went into a shop with her, eventually she turned around and told him to 'f' off'.
Last week my wife was followed by one and he actually grabbed her by the arm. There kind of chuggers I have no sympathy with.11K Challenge

There are actually chuggers outside our local Waitrose. In general the don't get in the way, in quite the same way as those along Euston Road....why it takes 8 from the same unheard of obscure charity to harris people is beyond me, because once you have fought your way past the first 4 the last 4 are living dangerously.... I know that charities have to be registered, but how many people actually check before donating? There does seem to be a lot of disabled children's charities these days, they need to consolidate more otherwise they waste too much money duplicating offices, facilities, loose bulk purchasing powers etc.My Mind wanders, if found please return.0

Why can't the chuggers annoy the toffs in Waitrose and M&S or are they banned in case they offend the self-proclaimed middleclass? Thanks toffs, for your answers.
Still, why don't the chuggers go to people who can afford to donate, such as yourselves in the posh shops.
What utterly puerile (look it up !!) comments !
Waitrose & M & S CARE about their customers - to accuse their customers of being "toffs" shows a complete ignorance of the facts of commercial life.
I shop in Waitrose because the staff are polite, pleasant and seem to care about what they are doing - unlike Tesco and ASDA.
AND - my local Waitrose gives £1000 a month to local charities.............
If you wish to be a "class warrior" - please carry on - it just makes you look stupid.........................................0 -

They are not allowed to follow people.
Article from the Independent from several years ago:
http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news/tough-new-rules-and-fines-to-crack-down-on-charity-chuggers-8063470.html
Extract:The existing rules were also amended so that chuggers cannot follow someone down the street for more than three steps. Each transgression incurs a set number of penalty points for the organisation. After a minimum threshold of 1,000 penalty points is reached, the organisation is fined at a rate of £1-per-point.
Anyone grabbing my arm would find themselves on the wrong end of a 999 call for assault.0 -
I have to say that whilst I have never felt uncomfortable about charity bag packers, this is because I am in a position to be able to put something in their bucket for doing it. I can understand that if someone is struggling financially, that this could be an added pressure that they might feel uncomfortable about.....especially if a polite decline is met with frosty looks.
Perhaps stores should reserve some tills where people could just go through and pack themselves without having to face the issue of having to refuse a bag packer they don't want. This would help balance the needs of the charity with the sensitivities of the shoppers.
I have to say though that once a young chap packed one carrier bag for me and I put a £2 coin in his bucket....to which he replied "Oh, the last lady gave me £5". "Oh really, I replied....well, that's nice" Cheeky little so and so....I guess some organisations don't give their youngsters any training....Ha ha, or perhaps in hindsight they do !0
