Hello, in January this year, our dual fuel bill with BG was £180 for me and 2 teenage daughters. As we had paid for a new boiler, I was getting increasingly frustrated at the high price, did as much as we can to save energy and current bill, with new supplier is £103, £41 of this is electricity. Hoping it will be reduced further in months to come with continued meter readings and frugal approach.

Previously when in a small two bed cottage with loads of draughts and no insulation I was on a dual fuel deal. I got a £100 discount for dual fuel but because of the heat loss I just wore a sleeping bag with legs all day, even at the computer. My gas bill for hot water effectively was £5 for the year. Because the minimum gas payment was £5 a month I was clocking up refunds regularly on my 50p of gas use per month.
It's really easy to default to cynicism these days, since you are almost always certain to be right.

I was paying £40 for electric and £61 for gas based on the 'average' 2 person, 2 bed consumption by Southern Electric's calculations.

Realised on Monday that I was over £300 in credit which is being refunded this week!!

My new direct debits are £30 for electric, £40 for gas which they are hoping will put me in to a small amount of credit by the winter.

We aren't overly frugal with our consumption but are away at weekends regularly and have an LED TV and no tumble drier.

We have been with British Gas for over 5 years many problems. Paid £150 per month for over 4 years by DD (NO Gas). 4 adults old cottage but on ecomomy 7 (5 radiators) winter evenings cold by 5p.m. Why dont you change supplier I hear you say, can't, we are apparently £8,000 in debit! Have been asking for over a year how we use so much electricity, all they have done, which took them 9 months was to check the metre, (cost £60) they told us it was accurate, if anything it was working slower than norm but they would not claim the undercharge. I have emailed the CEO but wont hold my breathe. Have been informed by British Gas, to clear arrears and continue using electricity my monthly DD should increase to £896.66 per month! British Gas Profiteering, surely not. Just got an email reply from CEO. maybe things will get donenow

    Hi OP
We've just had a massive electric bill thanks to a leaking water tank and Economy7. They wanted to change our direct debit to £261/month. Before that we were down to about £100 for electric on Economy7. Are all your appliances working, no hot taps dripping...?
We've just replaced the Economy 7 with a combi-boiler. Yesterday we used 7kwh of electric. 3 bed, I was at home with little one, DH out to work. I'd suggest looking at kwh used, as it's tricky comparing with others who are on different rates etc. Love our little electric monitor too!
Good luck getting that bill down!

  • i have bought an BT electricity moniter that says i use around 7 units a day which over 6 months adds up too 1260 units and my electric company are trying to say ive used 2240 units i am currently paying 80 pounds a month and this is not covering the bill apparently, i had paid off a £800 bill over the christmas period to which they set me at £177 a month tariff i brought it down to £80 pounds as i was struggling to live with a bill almost more then the flat itself is worth on a monthly basis but apparently £80 is not enough they want more i only have my t.v and my computer on, on a constant basis and they are telling my i have used more units during the summer period than i did in the winter go figure considering it is a 1 bedroom flat i recon im getting royally shafted my brothers electricity bill was around £10 a week on similar usage.....

  • 2 bed semi bungalow, 2 adults, all electric, night storage heaters, econ 7 hot water, dishwasher, 1 average TV, PC, lots of cooking plus I'm home a lot of the time as I don't currently work due to disabilities - we pay £70 per month averaged over the year with LoCo2 fixed until 2015. I send meter readings by email every month or so.

Often I am at home by myself for long periods so some lights & radio are on for 'company', I rarely use the tumble drier.

We have 'A' or 'B' rated appliances.

We have very good loft & wall insulation & notice the difference since the last lot was put in. We also use the open fireplace to burn (free) wood when we have it for extra warmth in spring & autumn without turning the NSHs on. But we do go 'scavenging' for burnable wood & kindling all year round :D
