The rise of Extremism in Economically tough times

Not having enough workers to support the ageing population.
Other solutions of course but they're not universally popular either.
Yes some immigrants have the audacity to breed.
Same place as yours - an agricultural labourer probably descended from an immigrant.
Obviously you went to a nicer finishing school.
we are all immigrants from Africa if one wishes to go back far enough
but how many immigrants do you want to come?
-unlimited : any that want to come?
-1 million a year?
-half a million a year (the current number)?
-less?0 -
Oh, they did have one. Here's the BBC summary of what was in it -

Of course, our Nige now says it was all 'drivel' so, presumably, we shouldn't take much notice of its contents.
Reading that, it's really interesting to see how much of it has actually been implemented since.
The tax free allowance being raised to 11500 - close (and a good idea)
Bank of England to regulate Banks - financial regulation was overhauled with the BoE getting more responsibility back.
Limit on gross immigration of 50k - Coalition did target 100k net. Moved in their direction.
School Vouchers - We have had free schools, which are basically school vouchers on a group level.
County Boards - Police and Crime Commissioners are similar to part of this role.
Scrap 50% university target - I think this was done?
Roll up of pensioner's benefits - That is underway
Roll up of general benefits - Also underway
Qualification for benefits after only 5 years of residency - The Home secretary recently said they were looking at extending the period, although not that dramatically.
Obviously lots of stuff didn't get done, and other things went in the opposite direction, but still kind of interesting.0 -

Shhh, please don't tell anyone. UKIP are supposed to be 'extremists'. Any suggestion that they might have some half-decent ideas is therefore not to be countenanced.:)0 -

And I'm guessing people have whining been about immigration about as long too...... *yawn*
There's a recession - get over yourselves. What do we do when we fall? We get up, dust ourselves off and start walking in the right direction again. Perhaps when we fall, it is easy to forget there are people along the way who help us stand and walk with us as we get back on track.0 -
what is a quasi independent nation? would Greece be a model?
what powers would they have then?
what tax powers? VAT, corporation tax, income tax?
could they borrow independently of the central government?
I guess I've coined the term. Each region's status would be akin to that of the Isle of Man, but the UK government's role would be reduced to foreign affairs, defence, and maybe some sort of constitutional protection. I'm not sure there's any precedent for it, I wouldn't recommend it, and I don't think it could happen. I'm looking for the status that Scotland has plus some limited tax raising powers, details and scope tbe. I think there's precedent for that in a number of federal set ups.No-one would remember the Good Samaritan if he'd only had good intentions. He had money as well.
The problem with socialism is that eventually you run out of other people's money.

To be honest, I think much of the protest about immigration is more to do with letting in more and more people from different non-European cultures who do not want to have anything to do with the people living here, are often downright hostile and are purely here for benefits. Labour was particularly responsible for allowing such people into Britain.
Europeans in general (so far) have come here to work and contribute a lot to society. They will not disrupt society, and if they do stay they will integrate well. In the hospital near me there are many continental Europeans and they are fantastic. The fact is, they want to work hard, which many indigenous Brits do not want to do. A way must be found to get unemployed Brits off their couches and back into work, instead of relying on benefits (up to a few decades ago, you had to work, otherwise you would starve). It is not right that hard-working people should pay for young, healthy people to be idle, and there is no point in blaming continental Europeans for 'taking jobs'. (Incidentally, neither is it right that hard-working taxpayers should be paying to support continentals' children even when they leave the country! I find this absolutely appalling.)0 -

for what problem is immigration a solution?
I think Labour saw and see it as a solution to the problem of not having enough voters.No-one would remember the Good Samaritan if he'd only had good intentions. He had money as well.

Tomorrow's producers will have to share with an increased number of non-producers. If those producers are willing to take a smaller proportion of their output for themselves then maybe we can do without immigration.0
