The rise of Extremism in Economically tough times

The odds on offer do appear to show that there is no clear favourite at the moment.
Oh, they did have one. Here's the BBC summary of what was in it -

Of course, our Nige now says it was all 'drivel' so, presumably, we shouldn't take much notice of its contents.
It depends on how organised they can get themselves. Of course, UKIP do now have the advantage of having 300 or more foot soldiers paid for by the public purse to help get the vote out. That's still not as many as the LDs, but it's a considerable advance on last time around.
IIRC they got consultants in to write the manifesto for them.0 -
a ghost
Like the people ghosting out of this thread when faced with simple questions that demolish their anti-immigrant hyperbole?
Hmmmm......“The great enemy of the truth is very often not the lie – deliberate, contrived, and dishonest – but the myth, persistent, persuasive, and unrealistic.

All the time anyone who expresses worries about uncontrolled immigration is called a bigot, racist, xenophobe, etc rather than taking account of their opinion, more extreme parties will flourish. Many people are sick and tired of the refusal to discuss the matter without name calling. (Hamish).
I am just wondering how many on this board might have been in a Conservative club for a pint in the past few decades, member or on invite as in my case a few dozen times.
If you want to hear pure ignorant racist ranting and elitist bigotry, then this is the place to go. I am amazed that nobody has put a few Youtube Tory club rants that you can start off with little effort at anyone of their bars.0 -
indeed so, I have posted many times on this subject
but I was interested in your own view
do you want
-unlimited immigration?
-only 1 million a year?
-only 500,000 (the current (gross) rate)per year?
-less than 500,000 per year?
or what exactly?
I've said a number of times - it depends on what other measures are taken and how people are willing to live their lives.
Do you really think I've sat down and calculated this number? As long as my deferred consumption buys me the goods and services I want I don't care whether it's 1 million or 10.0 -

Sounds like a truly awful place. No wonder you've only been there a few dozen times.0 -

Where are these 100 million immigrants per year?
I understood your position to be that you believed in unlimited immigration from anywhere was good for the receiving nation.
I would assume that there would easily be that number from all sorts of places if one had open borders e.g. anywhere with a war going on, drought, poverty etc. so Iraq, Syria, Afganistan, South Sudan, Sudan, Somalia, CAR etc etc would easily find the requisite numbers.0 -
Now I've no idea what taxation powers the IoM has but can't you say what sort of power each region should have
what tax powers? VAT, corporation tax, income tax?
would they be able to abolish the 'green taxes'
would they be able to impose one off axes on the utilities
change wages rate of public sector worker (NHS, teachers, police etc)?
could they borrow independently of the central government?
what would they be ?
would they lose the Barnett formula as they can now raise their own taxes ?No I can't say what those details would be because I'm not an expert. It would take experts some time to work out a workable solution. What I am saying is that wherever Scotland ends up after rejecting independence, there is a case for the same status being granted to Wales, London, and all the other Uk regions. This may or may not involve a degree of tax raising authority, which I gather is going to be looked at in the case of Scotland.No-one would remember the Good Samaritan if he'd only had good intentions. He had money as well.
The problem with socialism is that eventually you run out of other people's money.

My position is that internal EU migration as the markets require is a very good thing, has served us well in avoiding the negatives of skills shortages and brain drain that existed in previous times, and has significantly benefitted the UK economy.
It has had virtually no material ill-effects to wages and employment for the overwhelmingly vast majority of the native born, and indeed has resulted in better financial and employment outcomes for most.
It costs virtually nothing to administer, is immune to political meddling and tinkering, and has gone a long way towards helping us with a rebalancing of the age profile that we badly need due to the ageing population and too low replacement birth rate we suffered for decades.“The great enemy of the truth is very often not the lie – deliberate, contrived, and dishonest – but the myth, persistent, persuasive, and unrealistic.

does that mean you wish for unlimited immigration from anywhere in the world?0 -

We have no need for unlimited immigration from anywhere in the world, as our current immigration system works well, so why would I wish for it?
Our current system of EU migration provides for our needs at virtually no cost to administer.
Why change it?“The great enemy of the truth is very often not the lie – deliberate, contrived, and dishonest – but the myth, persistent, persuasive, and unrealistic.
