The rise of Extremism in Economically tough times

Tomorrow's producers will have to share with an increased number of non-producers. If those producers are willing to take a smaller proportion of their output for themselves then maybe we can do without immigration.
indeed so, I have posted many times on this subject
but I was interested in your own view
do you want
-unlimited immigration?
-only 1 million a year?
-only 500,000 (the current (gross) rate)per year?
-less than 500,000 per year?
or what exactly?0 -

I'm not sure there's any precedent for it, I wouldn't recommend it, and I don't think it could happen. I'm looking for the status that Scotland has plus some limited tax raising powers, details and scope tbe. I think there's precedent for that in a number of federal set ups.
Now I've no idea what taxation powers the IoM has but can't you say what sort of power each region should have
what tax powers? VAT, corporation tax, income tax?
would they be able to abolish the 'green taxes'
would they be able to impose one off axes on the utilities
change wages rate of public sector worker (NHS, teachers, police etc)?
could they borrow independently of the central government?
what would they be ?
would they lose the Barnett formula as they can now raise their own taxes ?0 -

The new city-State could then be fully part of the EU and the rest of the country could live in the 1950s as they seem to desire. As a separate state we would have a GDP on par with Switzerland and Sweden. Separation would allow us to better run the London Economy. Right now London needs higher interest rates, our deprived areas need money diverted elsewhere in the UK.
Yes, if the rest of the UK want to go back to the 50s maybe it's time for a divorce?
Maybe like Malaysia, the rUK could kick London out to become a kind of landlocked Singapore.what is a quasi independent nation? would Greece be a model?
what powers would they have then?

This sounds like somewhere between the autonomous communities of Spain ( government's role would be reduced to foreign affairs, defence, and maybe some sort of constitutional protection) and the Home Rule of crown dependancies (which are a lot like what Devo Max was meant to be) with the freedom to be in or out of international organisations like the EU.There is no honour to be had in not knowing a thing that can be known - Danny Baker0 -

No need to set a target.
In open and free markets of goods, services and labour, the market will set the right levels without a need for autocratic and politically motivated central controls.“The great enemy of the truth is very often not the lie – deliberate, contrived, and dishonest – but the myth, persistent, persuasive, and unrealistic.
Belief in myths allows the comfort of opinion without the discomfort of thought.”

Well, when Scotland is independent you can welcome 100 million people per year or so people that will be the 'market response'.
Fortunately Scotland is blessed with unlimited riches (Salmond told me today) only held back by the hated English.
maybe buy shares in transport - a certain winner.
the good side is of course that the hated English won't be hated by the new majority.0 -

Britain has been part of the EU with unlimited (other than by market needs) potential immigration for a very long time.
Where are these 100 million immigrants per year?“The great enemy of the truth is very often not the lie – deliberate, contrived, and dishonest – but the myth, persistent, persuasive, and unrealistic.

you are seriously saying that Newcastle could have a
-different VAT rate from it's neighbours?
-and corporate tax
-and income tax
-and print it's own money
-and borrow (unguaranteed) by the BoE
-and have a different health service ?
-and a different set of laws etc
-different state pension
I find that a little difficult to comprehend0 -

I have trouble comprehending how a free trade area copes with a number of those things. Probably explains why the one we're in is trying to harmonise it's member states ...If you think of it as 'us' verses 'them', then it's probably your side that are the villains.0 -

You ever woken up and thought you saw a ghost at the end of your bed? Turns out it was an immigrant. If you think of it as 'us' verses 'them', then it's probably your side that are the villains.0
