Dear all,

wonder if you be able to help and offer some advice.

I ordered a pocket sprung mattress online and upon delivery noticed that the width and length are upto 2 inches shorter than the ordered specification. The vendor has stated that this is normal and that the manufactured size can differ by upto 5% from the ordered size. I find this difficult to believe.

Has anyone heard of this before?

thanks for the help

David

Yes,, and it is quite common, particularly for pocket sprung mattresses. Mattress sizes tend to be an approximate figure only. A couple of inches would be within manufacturer tolerance.

I think there may be standard sizes , did you order a double or kingsize, or was it an odd size to your spec.? I have never had to measure my new ones as being on a divan base, they just seemed to fit.
do you wsnt to post a link to it?

Yes there are standard sizes but as I stated they are approximate to allow for manufacturer tolerance, usually +/- 1-2inches, especially if they are hand made and dependant on construction materials. Most reputable mattress sellers will tell you this.

Also make note that some companies make to imperial size 4ft6 by 6ft3, others will make to metric 135cm by 190cm. That difference on top of machine tolerances can mean quite a difference.

Pocket sprung matts will spread a little once in use.

thanks for you help everyone. I have a two inch gap on the width and the length for a king size bed. As such, the base of the bed is visible and things can drop into it. Will such a large gap close over time?

It might be worth contacting the manufacturer or looking on their website (if they have one) to see if you confirm that this is actually the case.

    +/-5% variation???

No way - that could be 7-8 inches total variation on the standard length of a mattress

But mattresses are produced to metric specifications nowadays (and the imperial equivilent is just a guide)

Various manufacturing/retail sites suggest variations of possibly +/-2cm or +/- 2.5cm, but not inches.

Personally I would have thought a % of the dimension would have been specified, and I did find one place that specified 1.25% ... which just so happens to be 2.375cm on a typical length of 190cm (King size is usually 200cm long)

Not true, loads still make to imperial! With over 100 different companies making mattresses in the UK.
