The answer to the question is you drive at a speed which is safe for you and vehicle you are driving. If you can only do 40 on a motorway, or 30 on rural roads, then you need to hand in your licence, because you are not competent.

However all these people getting self righteous, because someone holds them up are laughable. The roads are busy, you will be delayed, live with it.

A good example is a twisty b-road near me with a national speed limit posted. If I attempted to drive at that speed in my car I would end up in a hedge. I am sure the Audi driver behind me can go faster, but he is going to have to wait. Afer all, at most I am adding a couple of minutes to his journey.

Also the speed merchants don't seem to take account of traffic lights. There is a hill just outside my work which people bomb up at 60,70,80 mph. It doesn't matter how slowly you drive, you always catch them at the set of lights at the top of the hill. Going faster on that road is a pointless waste of fuel.

If I was in a good mood and a decent song was on the radio, I would be pleasant, give you space and probably have a giggle at your level of caution.

If I was in a bad mood, I would probably be making exaggerated gestures in the hope you would spot me through your mirror and speed up (note, I have never had anybody speed up...it obviously doesn't work!).

I will never speed up behind somebody though, nor will I flash them or overtake. Not that I mind others doing it...I'm just a bit of a wimp when it comes to overtaking.

My mother and I always have this conversation...although she isn't a slow driver in general, she will often drive on the middle lane of the motor way at about 60mph. When I suggest she moves over, she is always very defensive, saying it's not an aim, but a limit. She does have a point but I've received so many glares from other drivers, I honestly don't know how she stays so ignorant.

I do think that slow drivers can cause just as many accidents as fast drivers...although I imagine that the majority of these accidents involve those drivers who choose to drive faster than the rest!
Did you tell your mother she's wrong and she can be fined for doing this

Her answer about being an aim rather than a target has got absolutely nothing to do with moving into the left lane if it's clear, and she is not actually overtaking.

    It's both antisocial and illegal.

    More random thoughts on this...

You cannot cherry-pick from the Highway Code. It ALL applies, as a whole. Including rule 125 (speed limits are an absolute maximum).

Bear in mind that different vehicle types have different limits and different capabilities and with the amount of traffic on our roads, it is inevitable that from time to time "fast drivers" will be impeded by "slower drivers". Whether this happens on motorways where heavy traffic or a hill throws slow moving traffic out into the outer lanes, or on a country lane where the farmer is taking the tractor home for his tea, the reaction should be the same - patience and consideration for other road users.

Middle lane hogging (which can even become lane 3 hogging on 4-lane roads) is annoying, and I would hope that any Police or HA staff witnessing it, would at least "have a word".

The notion that faster drivers have any kind of right to overtake is a nonsense. The 90mph club would be the first to deny someone coming up behind them at 120mph their right to overtake.

Correct, consideration to other drivers applies to everyone.

So if you are driving slowly, to the point that you can see a line of traffic stuck behind you, the considerate things would be to:
Pull over and let them past (or even simply move to a position within 10 feet of the left hand edge of the lane so they could actually overtake :D)
Not drive that lane during peak times.
Drive a little nearer the speed limit (as discussed, this may exceed their abilities)
Not stop everytime there is anything coming towards them, or if there is any slight wobble in the road, but accelerate to 85 on any stretch wide enough for 6 cars so you would be able to pass them, (even with the 20 feet of space they have to have on the left)

I generally try to stick within the posted speed limits. I am very aware that other drivers would prefer me to drive faster, but I really don't care. And, like an earlier poster, if they tailgate me I slow down.

I've started to put my hazards on if people tailgate me. Usually makes someone back off a bit.

During good conditions you should at least keep to the speed limit, if you can't even do that then personally i don't think you should be on the road as slow drivers are just as dangerous as speeding drivers
