To clarify? So you, like the driver in front, just pottered down the overtaking lane, as you have said, clearly overtaking nothing, as you assumed the overtaking lane was just queued up, by a string of motorists overtaking nothing? And you decided you couldn't pull in, as if you did find something to overtake, you would have to pull out again? Or have I missed something here? Apart from the obvious fact you were too close and too stressed to even realise, when you looked through the glass of the car in front, there wasn't anything in front of him?

At one point there were cars in front of the chap in front of me.

If I had pulled in then given that I wanted to go faster than 60, I wouldn't be going slower than him, I'd be matching his speed in the middle lane and then that would be two lanes doing 60. Pulling into the middle lane as a hint, wasn't working. As I said, undertaking doesn't seem right to me.

I wasn't too close at all, I don't drive aggressively, I got all of that out of my system at least 30 years ago. And I certainly wasn't stressed:rotfl:, I think I'd go for bemused.

    So to recap.

Flash lights and drive up to bumper as a hint to move over - not my style.

    Undertaking is a no.

Pull into middle lane and match his speed, which would achieve two lanes going at 60.

Not saying that sitting behind him was great, but out of available options, seemed as good as any.

Anyway, I'm off on my holidays, I'll leave you all to your perfect driving;)

    143. DO NOT overtake where you might come into conflict with other road users. For example

    • approaching or at a road junction on either side of the road
    • where the road narrows
    • when approaching a school crossing patrol
    • between the kerb and a bus or tram when it is at a stop
    • where traffic is queuing at junctions or road works
    • when you would force another vehicle to swerve or slow down

Guess you haven't read all the highway code, even if you are fond of quoting the bits you have read. If you keep reading, you'll findthe bit that says I'll be doing the maximum allowed speed, so it's not actually going to be possible to slow anyone down. You are welcome to try to report me to the police for getting in your way, and it would be interesting to see which view they take, if you tell them you where doing 80, and some inconsiderate motorist impeded you progress by over overtaking at 70 in front of you? And for the record, I do this, I overtake, when I need to, and I make the best progress past, without speeding. And you can chomp at the bit for the 10 seconds it'll take me to pass, at 2mph faster.
  • Well there you go then, that's almost an admission that you take pleasure from holding people up because you think you have the moral high ground. If you "can't" go fast then neither should anyone else, because that's the law! Perhaps if you drove a "proper car" with better performance than an asthmatic slug, then perhaps your outlook would change :)

Seriously, you are actually of the mindset the if you have a big car you're allowed to go faster than people in smaller cars? You own a BMW? But you did manage to get one thing right, that is the law, and I certainly won't be breaking it for a prat behind me, no matter how much he believes it doesn't apply to him. If he's happy breaking that particular one, I don't care if he decides to ignore all the rest, and undertakes on the hard shoulder, so long as he stays out of my way.

Because it was so-so busy and it is often a solid line of traffic at the time of day, so it was a fairly reasonable assumption. I had been following him for some time and there had been vehicle (s) in front of him.

When the first car pulled into the middle lane to pass him, he didn't pull over, so it's fair to say that the car in front of me wouldn't have pulled over if I had sat in the middle lane, but the car behind me would have pulled up behind him and I'd have to pull back into the middle lane when I next came to a vehicle.

I prefer not to undertake and on the rare occasion that I have done so, it's usually led to flashing lights and gestures. I don't particularly like aggression on the road. In my view, whatever I did, be it undertaking, flashing at him to move over, changing lanes from middle to outer, to middle to outer repeatedly, wasn't great.

Unfortunately though, whether other traffic likes to sit in a 'queue' in the outside lane or not, if you had no intention of overtaking another vehicle, you should not have been in the overtaking lane, regardless of what anyone else was doing.

Well, if you stayed out of his way as well, then everyone would be happy! :D - but it seems that you deliberately chose not to and are actively enjoying causing trouble.

I think the word "selfish" has been used many times in this thread, I think I'll add the word "envy" just to stir things up.

Also, do I detect a little irony that you feel so self righteous that you feel you can dictate how other people drive?

I've just been following somebody hogging the right lane doing 40 in a 70 (NSL dual carriageway), who then went straight on at the next roundabout.

I'm thinking of getting twin Bofors fitted to my car!

An interesting response. You've picked up in a different thread one of the cars I use is a corsa, so you seem to equate that with you having a bigger car, so others must be envious of you. So cars are status symbols to you. Clearly, your size of car means to you you're better off than others, so no one should hold you up, as you have decided which laws don't apply to you, so others should make allowances for that. But obviously, you're more than happy to quote "law" when you think others may be perceived to be gaining an advantage over you, such as not letting you break the law on speeding, that you don't think should apply to you? Whereas I drive following the law, having stated you can break the law by going down the hard shoulder if you need to pass, me, I really won't care, that's what the police are there for, not me, but that's just a bit too illegal for you to contemplate doing?

I drive all day/all night/in all weathers. I drive at work and privately. On all roads, i drive at or within the speed limit. I may adjust my speed downward depending on the prevailing circumstances. On motorways I drive at 70mph or below depending on circumstances. I am mindful of other traffic and do not hold them up but neither will i be intimidated into driving illegally or faster than i consider safe. If they choose to speed past..well up to them.
Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..

You have no idea what I drive. I know exactly what you drive because you've said as such. You can speculate as much as you like!

", such as not letting you break the law on speeding, "
YOU are not the Police. How about you let them do their job, and you keep the roads flowing freely by following some fairly simple guidelines that quite clearly state DO NOT make other people slow down?

I've not once quoted law, I've quoted a single section of the highway code. I've used the word "law" once or twice as a tongue in cheek response to continue the argument. I'll keep going for as long as you like :) I quite simply couldn't disagree more with your stance.
