transport does anybody know if you have to drive you child to school can you get assistance or do they just issue you with bus passes as there is no direct way of my son to get to his chosen school

    Hi m-u-m

Home to school transport is available to anyone that has to travel more than 3 miles from their home to get to their school provided they are not bypassing a school that is within 3 miles of their home and in the same category (grammars are 1 category & secondaries are a separate category). MyDD has a free bus pass to her Grammar because there is no Grammar within 3 miles of our home. Likewise, I am expecting my DS to get one from September to go to Grammar.

All of that said, DE recently carried out a review of home to school transport and an announcement on the way forward is awaited. John O'Dowd has already stated that the review has shown that most of the kids who benefit from free transport are kids in grammars (which he is, of course, trying to decimate) and, according to him, therefore come from homes that can afford to pay for buses! Hence, it would not be surprising if he ends free transport for grammar kids unless they are entitled to free school meals as he seems to link everything to free school meals because that suits his party agenda.

You should ring Campbell College tomorrow or Tuesday and ask what was the lowest score they accepted. If your son was very close to their cut off you might find your son could be placed on a waiting list should a place become available. It's worth a try. Other than that, if RBAI would be of any interest to yous you could ring them as well. They usually have cuts off of lower than many other grammars.

You should ring AG and ask, they will tell you. Then you will know whether it's worth while putting your child's name on their waiting list. If a place becomes available, schools offer it to the 1st child on their waiting list and the list is in rank order of scores - so highest score is top of the list etc.. If you really want AG, don't be put off if your child's name is not top of the waiting list, it may still work out for you. When my DD was in Form 1, her grammar school took in 3 new kids within the 1st 6 months (all from their waiting list). So you never know.

Sorry to hear of your predicament, I imagine your son is upset. Do ring Campbell College, but I think, in cases like this, the Education Authority will advise you which schools still have places available. I'm not sure if they contact you, you may have to contact them but you should do this on Tuesday, without delay. Good Luck. Let us know how you get on. :)
