No need to phone, just apply online. Chances are the account will be open and usable online before they would answer the phone. You obviously will have to wait for the card and PIN to arrive by post.

I'm surprised that a bank (RBS in my case) would allow you to open a second identical current account, not that I'm complaining. Shall I open it in branch? If they ask for a reason as to why I want a second current account, what could I say?

    Thanks for the insight guys...

    I have, or have had...

    4 x Halifax Reward accounts
    3 x Lloyds Vantage
    3 x BoS Vantage
    3 x Nationwide FlexDirect
    2 x TSB Plus

    ...simultaneously.

Others on here will have had, in addition to the above, 3 x TSB Enhance, 2 x Santander 1-2-3...and others have reported holding as many as 7 x Lloyds Vantage.

If you do it online, nobody will ask you questions. It literally takes no more than a couple of minutes. But a good reason for why you want a second account is so that you can manage your money better.

Long before people like me opened multiple current accounts, there were the "jam jar" people who had all sorts of multiple accounts for bills, holidays, birthdays, car repair etc etc. Banks are used to people having more than one of the same, although some of the more recent current accounts do have a limit of 1 or 2 now because banks don't want to pay people lots of interest.

See my musings above about searches of your credit files. If all you want in the next 6-12 months is a different current account, there is no problem applying straight away. I have often applied for 2 accounts on the same day, and I have successfully made more than half a dozen current applications this year alone.

Thanks - took your advice and applied last night for a Co-Op account, another £100 and they have a banking app! Approved this morning so all is AOK.

I have just opened an M & S account. Today I received my welcome pack. In there is a leaflet which says "as a thank you, when you move your everydsy banking including your direct debits and standing orders to your new account using the current account switch service, we'll send you a 100 pounds m&s gift card". I thought no dd's or so's were required for this account to receive the gift card?

Does your leaflet say you must move DDs and/or SOSs?

It does not say must, just when. I think that is answered then, thanks.

"Leaflets" don't govern relationships between banks and customers, T&Cs do that.

The £100 gift card for switching T&Cs are on their website. :)
