Thanks for your replies.
I'll call the garage tomorrow and see what they say but I suspect the outcome will not be good.
On the brightside I've just had a couple of great weeks camping and it could have broken down in the middle of Cumbria with a 2 year old on board!
It's also now at a reputable garage so hopefully the next fix will be a permanent one (or at least a warranted one)
Whats the car?
Not a rover bychance?0 -

Seller told you not to come back if anything goes wrong. Sounds like they got the job done on the cheap.
Told the garage to stick a new gasket on and not bother spending time/money checking anything.
Parked it up or use it gently for a few months where a buyer will assume its all good because the work was done months ago and its still OK.
What caused the gasket to fail though?Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -

Unless the receipt from the garage was manufactured it wasn't done on the cheap (at least at the request of the previous owner - I guess the garage could still have done it on the cheap)
Which makes your questions all the more pertinent.0 -

If the bill is hefty but the work poor I hope this:
"She even made a point of saying not to come back to her if anything went wrong!"
Wasn't a factor in the quality of their work. What if there was no such thing as a rhetorical question?0 -

Colino, Could you clarify that I have no comeback against the Garage that did the job in November because it was a private seller? I never assumed that I had any comeback against the seller themelves. Thanks.
I nearly bought a bongo once, I did a fair amount of research and you will find http://www.igmaynard.co.uk/bongo/forum/ a valuable source of info.
the diesel, if I remember correctly, bongo is very sensitive to water level and most owners fit a secondry warning device as by the time the warning light comes on its too late.
Hope this site is of help to you.0 -

This is what a lot of people do with the K-series engine. 9 times out of 10 the head gasket failure was due to overheating rather than the other way round. It always pays to make sure you water levels are correct and you dont have any minor leaks. (says the guy how has a minor leak and keeps putting off sorting it out :rotfl:)0 -
Over and above the lack of quantity of coolant the K series have, the poor Bongo engine is hidden away in a very draft proof area and most of them permanently are laden because of the conversions done to them. Hope the OP gets away with a light skim and rebuild.0

Well I spoke to the garage who did the work last time (it was a lot more comprehensive than I thought - the word 'rebuild' is on the receipt) and they have basically said that they offer 6 months warranty on Parts and Labour and these have both expired (by 12 days!)0
