    It's a Mazda Bongo

Colino, Could you clarify that I have no comeback against the Garage that did the job in November because it was a private seller? I never assumed that I had any comeback against the seller themelves. Thanks.

It depends, a lot of warranties are non-transferable. As others have said - you might need to get the previous owner to take the car back to the garage and claim.

We have a receipt, although I don't have it to hand.

If the seller was truly a private seller then you dont have any recourse with them.

I suspect you wont get far with the original garage for the following reasons
    • I dont think they'll have a "guarantee" on their work some six months down the line
    • If they do they may argue its not transferrable
    • They might have been told to "change the gasket only" by the previous owner
    • They may have had the head tested and at that time it was fine
    • They might argue there is a subsequent fault.

Of course you could test the validity of any of the above, but you would have to take them to court to do it...

Cant seeing the previous owner being particularly interested in getting involved.

Worth asking i guess, but i wouldnt bank on it.

I'll certainly ask the question (assuming the garage request it) but I'm inclined to agree we you.

She even made a point of saying not to come back to her if anything went wrong! Hindsight.......

Interesting thing to say when selling a car.

Or, just someone who's previously sold a car and had a PITA buyer try and chase them up after 6-12 months for something random

Context is all. It's the kind of line you might chuck in as a joke.

But, no, private seller - no comeback.
You've got no relationship with the original garage, so it's down to goodwill on their part and them accepting liability - because there's no way anything'll be easily provable. And, for a ~20ish vehicle, there could be any number of causes.

    All,

    Thanks for your replies.

I'll call the garage tomorrow and see what they say but I suspect the outcome will not be good.

On the brightside I've just had a couple of great weeks camping and it could have broken down in the middle of Cumbria with a 2 year old on board!

It's also now at a reputable garage so hopefully the next fix will be a permanent one (or at least a warranted one)

our head gaskrt went in our shogun.

first garage wanted to strip the engine down send the head away and refit. really big bill.

second one replaced the head and rad and all the other bits that could have gone faulty. they worked out 1/2 the price.

i would say switch your radiator if getting it fixed. not a massive amount and the main cause of a blown head gasket. labour can cost a lot more than parts. and dont trust just onr garage. its a good earner for them.
