Dispute a default on my experian credit file.

I have just found something I do not recognise on one of my credit files. I would like to dispute this as I do not remember it.

Account type Telecommunications Supplier
Account number ******1763 0
Account start date 27/07/2012
Opening balance £ 988
Repayment frequency Monthly
Date of default 07/02/2013
Default balance £ 988

How do I send a request for them to prove it please?

I would just send a letter stating that you have noticed an entry on your credit file and have no knowledge of the alleged account or debt (if that is the case).

You could perhaps use some of the wording from the standard prove it letter (although obviously it would need amending as nobody has chased you for this debt) Letter when you know nothing about about the debt - AKA "Prove it" letter

could this be emailed? Is it possible to get it removed from credit file if they can not prove it?

It should be possible for it to be removed if they cannot provide any evidence of it being your debt.

You could try emailing I guess. If you don't get a satisfactory response from that I would try written post.

  • I have emailed, waiting to hear what they come up with. I have never heard from them, only just found this on my credit file.
  • Would appreciate some more advice on this.

So I have been asking them could they please prove it, I did the correct letter, all they say is yes the debt is in your name.

I keep asking them could they please prove, it seems to me they cant.

What is the next step please to get it removed from my file if they cant prove it?

I'm not sure of the actual procedure, but you can just ask them to prove that it was you who signed the original contract. If they can't, then they're obligated to remove the debt IIRC.

You could also try contacting the CEO of the company. You'll never actually talk to the CEO, but you will at least get put through to someone who has the power to do something.

If they refuse, I'd contact a solicitor and get professional advice.
Credit 'Score' - Don't buy the credit 'score' that Experian, Equifax and Noddle want to sell you. It's an arbitrary number that means nothing when it comes to applying for credit.

Who are you talking to, the credit reference agency or the company that alleges you have a debt?

So what information has the creditor (or debt collector) sent to you regarding this debt?

Have they sent you a copy of the original contract/agreement? or copies of the outstanding invoices or what?

If this relates to a telephone contract have they informed you the phone number used on the account? and if so is that a number you recognise?
If it relates to another telecommunications supply (such as broadband) have they confirmed the supply address?
