Hi Jim!
You must still be there, I'm off on Thursday! Can't wait.
Did you have a lovely time? the weather looks so gorgeous.
How are the exchange rates doing over there?
Can't wait to hear about your trip xx0 -
Hi Jilly,
Weather is perfect, the sea is lovely and warm! Getting 3.55tl to the £ from Garranti bank cash point, or take £ and change in the branch.
Had an amazing time as ever and I am sure you will too.0 -
Hi Jim
So glad you had a lovely time, I'm going to take a bit of lira with me and exchange £ there.
Ahmet is booked for the airport, I'm ready to go!
Has anything changed since you were there last year?
Did you go on a boat trip with Memhet?
You're off to Egypt next yes? Lovely, you're tan will never fade!

Went on Mehmet's boat (Donmez1) three times! Just 30tl for the day (about £8.50) including Lunch, tea and biscuits and fruit with wine. On one trip a local came along who had just given up his engineering business to live his dream by making and opening his own ice cream parlour.
When we returned from the trip the entire boat went and had free ice cream in his shop- That's how friendly this place is.
When you go into the Barrel say hello to Mel and Seamus (Mel's Scottish and Seamus is Irish), they can tell you all the best places to go to, they took me around the other side of the town to places that I've never been to before (the first annual Gulluk daytime pub crawl)- great views across the bay from the "glass house". Mel knows the best places to change your money as he always brings Sterling and changes in resort.
Saw some great wildlife from the boat-
If you really like it there property is ridiculously cheap. A three bedroom apartment in town (above the post office is £23,000) and the apartment we stayed in on the Olive Trees complex was purchased for £90,000 a few years ago but can be yours today for £35,000.
Most places now have free wi fi so staying in touch is easy.
Egypt in 60 days but already making plans to return to Gulluk next summer. Have a great trip Jill!
edit- will add that we flew Easyjet for the first time and it was a doddle- had carry on luggage only and we were with friends in the town with 35 mins of landing. Ahmet's driver will be waiting for you at the front of the queue of all the taxi driver by the airport front door with a large clear printed sign with you name on it- it couldn't be simpler.0 -
2 days to go!!!
Thanks so much for all the info Jim, I'll say hello from you at the Barrel...maybe i'll get to go on a Gulluk pub crawl! That'll be interesting. Looking forward so much to Donmez boat trip - i'm going to go a couple of times too. Fab picture.
I was wondering how i would recognise Mehmet's guy at the airport...thankyou for letting me know.
Property is so cheap out there, such a shame for people who have invested but lucky for buyers.
60 days and you're off again! Don't bother unpacking Jim lol.
So - i'll let you know how it all goes and thanks again for all your help and advice....just brilliant.

Hi Jim
I had the best time! Thanks to all your info i felt really at home in Gulluk.....first day saw Joe sat outside the Broken Barrell with Nico and went and said hello. They were just lovely, went everyday for a coffee and Joe changed my money for me (i always missed the banks or forgot my passport!).
I absolutely loved Gulluk, felt completely at comfortable and safe. Very friendly as you said, everywhere i went i made new friends.
Went on Donmez with Mehmet, best boat trip i've ever been on, so much fun. Saw the wild boars, swam and snorkelled. Mehmet posted pics of me on facebook! Then another day i was just ambling along and he invited me on board for a coffee as he was quiet that day - love him and his wife.
Horizon Sky was amazing, lovely apartment with a Jacuzzi, breath taking views, couldn't of asked for more.
I made friends and sampled Joe's lovely cocktails one evening.
Your photo of Gulluk Cafe and the chair....i sat in the exact same spot and toasted you with the best coffee in Turkey, such a lovely spot.
So.....i'm going back next year and i can't wait! Mehmet said he can sort an apartment for me if i don't want to go back to Horizon but to be honest i don't really mind, I just love Gulluk!
Thank you again Jim, you advice and help made it so easy for me to recognise places and people!

Brilliant news Jill! I was a little worried that you may have found Horizon Sky a little cut off but glad you didn't. Isn't Gulluk just the friendliest place ever full of some great characters!
Glad you made friends with Mehmet and his wife- amazing people.
Great news that after going on your own and being a little nervous you want to go back next year. It is really easy to get an apartment, so many are empty and the owners struggle to get rentals. Every time you go back you bump into old friends but you make so many new ones, it's like noting I've experienced before.
Don't tell to many people about the charms of Gulluk- we don't want to spoil it. I don't know when I'll be back next year, but you never know....
Warmest regards- Jim.
