    I didn't call anyone "undeserving"
You were trying to differentiate between different groups of people on JSA due to having no qualifications, etc (ie: undeserving in your view) and those that were made redundant (or left) a "good" job. (ie: the "deserving")

Surely it is what you do whilst claiming JSA that matters, not what you were earning before?

What they don't get is that jsa is a subsistence living whether you were a previous millionaire or never paid a penny of ni in your life.

I can. It is social justice. People of all stripes have to go out to work to make money, often to jobs which they dislike. Why should the long term unemployed not in a similar effort for the money they receive?
social justice? they arent criminals you know. similar effort? no they dont get a similar income or similar rights. you as a taxpayer do not benefit from a person sitting in a room signing their name everyday. you as a taxpayer lose because it costs you money to enable that to happen and you get nothing in return. of course the person doing it does not benefit from it either. it does not improve job prospects. if anything it hinders them.

Hardly helpful when going to interviews, training courses, etc if you have to sign on each day is it?
The Jobcentre are not exactly easy to contact, and they are not flexible in changing appointment times.

This is am even bigger problem if it takes you an hour or more to get to the Jobcentre by public transport.

So how is it exactly helping people to find work?

I really do think some people have no more sense than they were born with.
indeed, it seems no matter what it is the government come up with certain people will always support it no matter how stupid it is.

Time for training courses is now long gone, it really is time to s*** or get off the pot
then why are they currently sending people in this group on training courses?

If the JobCentre were easy to contact, I would perhaps agree with you.

Sadly, on too many occasions they are not.

You are given a phone number at your local Jobcentre to ring for such situations.
Around nine times out of ten, it will ring and no one answers - with no facility to leave a message on an answerphone.

Then the jobseeker is worried sick that they may lose their benefits - so are hardly likely to perform well in the interview.
they cant be trusted. so all a person with an interview can do is try to re-arrange it. if that isnt possible then dont go to it its that simple.

Trying to not get too much into the debate of people doing enough on benefits but each job I have ever had since I was at school was found OUTSIDE the jobcentre especially in the early days when someone you know would hear of a temp job or something coming up and you would ring up and get an interview on phone or asked to come in, hey I even remember ringing random bars asking if they needed staff and getting work(all legal as signed off to do so) and in my experience each time the jobcentre was useless, doing things such as refusing to let me sign off till my normal sign on day even if I had already been at work a week by time that came round, one time even posting me back my booklet saying I couldnt sign off yet, another time getting sanctioned after I left work due to heavy bullying from the boss(to the point of physical threats) and all they did was phone the same boss when I was at first sign on to ask if the allegations were true, when the boss said they werent and it was me being abusive to them I had my money sanctioned for 3 months, another time I spend hours filling in forms but forgot to hand one in and despite being in the jobcentre before closing time I was told they already filed the applications, so they sanctioned me for not handing a form in for a job I had zero chance of getting(as it happened I reapplied for same job a few months later as the employee failed training and was turned down for being inexperienced) that time I was sanctioned for 6 months, and 3 times when I had chances like being part time at college and having a exam that meant I could go full time did I pass it, first time they rearranged an advisor interview for the same day same time and told me if I failed to attend I would lose money, 2nd time they called me into an interview about 2 days before christmas and a supervisor was there and twisted my words to say my 5 hours a week course had 45 hours a week self study(it was 1st year 1st semester and a course that needed little study) therefore I was full time so I would get a loan and therefore not available for work, 3rd time was almost identical to 2nd time except they suddenly decided to change my date and time of sign on to the same time as my course despite having the rest of day and week free(and then saying I had to sign on daily, I assume they thought as I said I had problems attending I was working)

Then we have the government itself, I had a course for autistic people who had the same interests as me, a 3 month 10-4 course sanctioned at the time by the jobcentre gave me a well paid IT job, what was the first thing the conservatives did when they came into power, CUT THE FUNDING FOR THE COURSE MAKING ME UNEMPLOYED FOR OVER 2 MORE YEARS!!!

Sorry I can go on for ages about this.

Not just that but you have to ring a 0845 number often which is expensive on a mobile, or if you claim you cannot make it for that time they get suspicious and in some cases tell you to fill in a form and you are likely to be sanctioned, it happened to me when I lived with parents in a village of a few hours and most of the occupants of houses were retired and the one that didnt worked night shifts, The JC told me to walk 12 miles at 6am in morning through countryside roads with no street lamps to get to a 9am appointment for a daily sign, then wait till 1pm to get bus home, other option was to accept a 1pm appointment meaning I had to get 9am bus, wait till 1pm, have appointment and get 6pm bus home, or the times when they wanted me to do a 8.45am to 6pm course when my last bus home was 6pm 20 minutes walk from training place, or when they wanted me to do gardening on New Deal starting at 6am but had to get the works minibus at 5am to get to the location by 6 am

The system is a joke and wants to make you jump through hoops at their say so and do not think about what is best for the person.

One of my excellent advisers decided it was a good idea to try to sign me up for basic computing and basic literacy/numeracy courses and threatened a sanction if I refuse - bless his white cotton socks...as I have equivalent of A-Levels in both and at that point I had 10 years experience as... IT Trainer :)

One of my friends who graduated last summer has been sent on a compulsory numeracy course by the job centre. All well and good except she graduated with a maths degree.... Just have to go though, no real point in arguing with them.
