Thanks for all the replys so far - i have tried the safe mode and it still will not boot up - get the same error message.
I have entered the xp cd that I got with the computer and tried to bood up using this cd and repair windows but unfortunately when I choose to set up xp now I dont get the repair option and when I press "r" to repair using recovery console it just takes me to the dos screen. I have tried the commands that previous posters have told me to do on this dos screen but still no success.
PLEASE HELP0 -
can anyone help me use the live cd in order to save my files???? I have no idea.0

Hmmm.... I was hoping that the others would be able to talk you through it, as I'm on holiday.

Obviously, you'll need internet access and a CD burner. Do you have disc burning software, such as Nero? If so, which version?
I should be out on the town.

yes there is a cd burner on my laptop although i dont know what software it is.0

Is there Nero or Roxio installed? XP or Vista? Laptop, that is.0
-
its xp - the cd burner just says its called RecordNow!0

Ok, that's Roxio. I'm checking as to whether you can burn a disc from an .iso image with that software. If not, I'm loathe to get you to download some other burning software for fear that it conflicts with Roxio.0

Your software doesn't do the job.
You'll need this, after you have downloaded the Knoppix .iso file and saved it to your computer; http://www.ntfs.com/downloads/Iso-burner.exe
Download it, scan it for viruses and then Run it(You don't need to install it to your computer).
You can use it to transfer the .iso disc image on to a CD-R.
Once that is created, set your PC to Boot from CD. Pop the disc into the PC disc drive and re-start the computer. If all goes well, the newly created Knoppix disc should create a Windows like interface(without installing anything on your computer) from which you can retrieve your files. You may need a USB memory stick to which to transfer your files.
I'm off to take a shower and then eat.0 -
Here's the link to the ISO Burner in case you need the instructions; http://www.ntfs.com/iso-burning.htm0
