The sort code exists, the acct number doesn't.

Is this a weird ploy to get me to transfer sums of money to your bank
Seriously I wish that had happened when I made my error it would have saved a couple of days of stress and about 20 phone calls to various unhelpful banks!
Maybe I depends on the recieving bank?0 -

Might have something to do with it, yes. The first one I tried was Santander to Santander, failed when setting up payee.
I have just tried another one, from Santander to First Direct. 40-47-60 90123770. Account does not exist, according to postcodeanywhere.
But I could set up the new payee alright, and my 1p has been sent to this account, and shows as a debit in my transaction list. It was, however, instantly credited back as "REJECTED TRANSFER VIA FASTER PAYMENT "0 -
"REJECTED TRANSFER VIA FASTER PAYMENT "
That's what mine was return as. Just 2 days later!0 -
I tried to do a Faster Payment TSB to TSB last week, but I got an error as my friend had given me the wrong account number. I think they gave me one starting with a 7 when it should have been a 4.0

That error just means it has failed the CRC. Not all invalid accounts will fail CRC though.0 -
What's a CRC when it's at home?0

A way of calculating the validity of a account number and sort code combination.
Anyone interested in an algorithm for checking the validity of account number and sort codes should check this document: http://www.vocalink.com/media/300578/vocalink_-_validating_account_numbers_v2.50.pdf0 -
The formal terminology is Modulus Checking
It tends to work on most of the clearing banks and less so on the former building society account numbers.
It's not really needed when setting up a payee within the same institution as their systems will know that account is not valid. That error just means it has failed the CRC. Not all invalid accounts will fail CRC though. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
