Gave wrong account number!

Hi, has anybody ever given the wrong account number to have money deposited into their account? I was due to have £7500 sent to me today by a HCEO company and they have e-mailed me to check my bank account as they have sent the money. When I checked the e-mail I previously sent them I've realised I've mixed up the last 2 digits of my account number! I'm so scared it has gone into a strangers account and I won't get it back!

You need to contact your bank, explain the situation and be prepared to be patient.

Ask them to confirm the details the payment has been sent to?

If the details are incorrect the sender of the payment will have to raise a concern with their bank.

I've contacted my bank (TSB) and they can't help and just told me to contact the company that have sent the money, but they are not open until tomorrow.

Did you ask them why they're checking your bank details after they've sent the money?

Could be that it bounced back already?

If not: if the account number didn't match that sort code then the money will sit in a suspense account before being returned to the sender.

If the account number is valid then it will have gone to someone else's account. TSB need to request the money is returned from the account holder.

You can use this website to check if the account number is valid: http://www.postcodeanywhere.co.uk/demos/bank-validator/ you might need to sign up for a free trial.

I thought that was a bit strange, I've e-mailed them but their office closed at 5pm so I don't expect a reply until tomorrow

"they have e-mailed me to check my bank account as they have sent the money."

I read that as meaning that they had sent the money and the OP should check their account to see that that was indeed the case.

You're unlikely to get the money back if it has gone to someone else's account I'm afraid, unless it has gone to a thoroughly honest person who wants to reunite the money with the rightful owner.

If you were lucky and the wrong number either corresponded to a non-existent account or failed the modulus(?) check, then you'll get your money soon and easily. Otherwise, you can be lucky if the incorrect recipient is a reasonable person and returns the money voluntarily. If not, be prepared to the worst, at least to a long battle.

And learn the lesson. From now on always use cut&paste or drag&drop instead of entering the important information manually.

Nothing wrong with entering important information manually so long as you check it several times.
