Baby gift that will be useful/practical

Hi
I'm wishing to purchase a gift for a new baby, the baby isn't due to arrive for another couple of months so I'd like to be prepared, we know it's a girl.
It's a loooooooooooooooooooong time since I had a baby. Can you help me with some ideas re what would be a useful and/or practical gift. I'm wanting to spend about £15-£20. I was thinking about a baby sleeping bag but wait to hear the views of others and am happy to change my mind.
Thank you.

baby sleeping bag is a good idea - I bought my ones from Asda at about £10 and they were just as good as more expensive ones.
if any of the supermarkets have baby events on, then the boxes of wipes are always helpful. again under £10.
or one of these (if they don't have one)

I swore by mine with my first baby, have bought a new one for number 2 (due any moment) and got my SIL one and she loves it. Even useful while still pregnant for back support etc.0 -
Do you know what things the parents already have?
Personally I like to buy educational gifts so even if it's a newborn baby, I'd buy a Fisher-Price/VTech toy, something that encourages hand-to-eye coordination such as a shape sorter.0 -

I saw silk baby sleeping bags somewhere for under twenty on sale when I was looking for a duvet a fortnight ago and thought they'd be a great gift. Very plain looking, but would be comfortable. I can try and locate the link if it helps?0 -
Another vote for sleeping bag.
Didnt use them with my first 2 kids, but did for my 3rd and didnt know why I hadnt.
Ive bought a few for presents.0 -
I got this for my niece and it was well received.

Shop about though as prices vary, I think I paid £15 for mine.0 -
I've found sleeping bags invaluable for my little girl so think it's a great idea. I'd advise getting it in a larger size e.g. 6-12 / 12-18 months (or both!) as I had everything ready for my baby's arrival but it was later on that our drop in income hit us hard and we couldn't afford much. It was nice knowing we had a few lovely bits given to us for my daughter to grow into
Sainsburys do lovely sleeping bags and every so often have a 25% off event.
Trying to live a good life on little money :T0 -

I recently got this for £10 on the Asda baby event online so you should definitely be able to get a good price somewhere.
Personally, as a pregnant lady myself, while the sleeping bag idea is good, I already have enough ready for my baby. If your friend is super organised she may have all the practical/useful things sorted. So maybe it is worth checking. Personally I like to buy books for new babies (and no one is surprised, since I am an English teacher) Really nice set of say Beatrix Potter books or Mr Men or something. Obviously they are not necessary immediately when baby is born but they will always have them0 -
Thank you to you all for your suggestions.
I forgot to say, I need to post the item so, although the Johnson's Essentials Box is a fab idea, it is less practical to post.
Love the idea of a book, in fact I am an avid competition entrant and I think I have a book somewhere that will make an ideal gift along with the sleeping bag which has gone down well, tho a bigger size.Thrifty Till 50 Then Spend Till the End

Unfortunately I don't know what the parents already have but they are a young couple who have recently just moved into their own flat.Thrifty Till 50 Then Spend Till the End
