Yes - that's what I am assuming / it looks like - I have not used my card at all in the last month, otherwise !!
This is absolutely insufficient ground for such accusation. Any company that you paid to in the past can be suspected, not to mention possibility of card details intercepted during in-shop purchases and ATM withdrawals.

    Well that is interesting...
as Amazon marketplace traders are never given access to purchasers card details.
The entire payment process for a marketplace sale is so I've been told by both amazon and by a marketplace trader themselves all handled by Amazon itself.
No customer finance related details are passed to the marketplace trader.

I presume it works much like Ebay/Paypal - the trader just gets notification that payment has been made and it is OK to dispatch.

So I'd be looking for another culprit if I was you
It could have been umpteen months ago that it was compromised.

I was not aware of that - apart from this Amazon purchase - I have not used my card AT ALL - in the last 4 months - except for paying for the TV licence on line - where does that leave me ?
I have asked the O2 for details of the purchase using MY CARD !!

I think Amazon have a serious problem with security. I bought a laptop from an Amazon seller with a brand spanking new credit card (never used anywhere else and never been out of the house). The order itself was subsequently cancelled, but when I went to order a replacement device, my card was blocked. Telephone calls to the CC company showed multiple fraudulent transactions for the likes of Play.Com and this had triggered automated fraud prevention procedures. I went off something alarming at the marketplace seller who also claimed that they dont have access to actual card details, just delivery address, so therefore, the leak must be at Amazon. When I raised this with them, they pretty much shrugged and insisted that my card company would deal with it - which to their credit, they did and I'm not out of pocket. Frankly, I'm alarmed by the implications of this and immediately removed any and all cards associated with Amazon. Seems they have some internal problems that they are unwilling to publicly acknowledge.

I'd be notifying Amazon as they'd probably take an interest- hopefully.

My loss has been accepted by Nationwide who are reimbursing me - but yes I would raise this with Amazon - if I could find the relevant link ....

Another possibility is some virus/keylogger in your PC.

Nationwide haven't accepted it, they are required to return monies until investigation has been completed. Should their investigation conclude that the transaction was valid, they can take the money again.

An Amazon marketplace seller has absolutely no way of getting hold of your card details, the money from the sale is collected by amazon and paid straight into their account once a fortnight.
Ebay works the same only if paypal is used, in some cases you can pay the seller directly by card over the phone.
The same company could have been trading on ebay or using their own website, using a different name, so you might have given them your card details somewhere else, without realising perhaps?

I gave them my card number for a purchase
It appears that they misused it !!
I do not leave my payment details on my on line account

Did you enter the card details on your amazon account page, or did you give them directly to the merchant?
Could it be that you used a phishing link and gave your details to someone else who then used them to steal from you? (I'd change your amazon password pronto if I were you)
