Updating the BIOS may solve the problem, but you need to apply the correct BIOS update. So we need to be sure of the board.
We could have a go at a test install of Windows 8, in order to eliminate some possibilities.
We'll get back the the BIOS afterwards.
Download the Windows 8.1 Enterprise evaluation

    Hi,
Have downloaded the Windows 8.1 Evaluation software on my daughters Laptop which she will transfer on to separate hard drive. Do I then just plug into my Pc and follow instructions or do I need to do anything special seeing as there is no Window OS installed?
    Thanks
Ps nothing back from Arbico as yet having sent an email request for advice this morning.

Just burn the image to disc(DVD). Why "transfer on to a separate hard drive"?

You'll install it in exactly the way that you installed Windows 7.

    Hi NiftyDigits,

Well I tried loading the disk as stated and chose the SATA DVD RW Drive for booting but then I just get black screen with flashing cursor in top left corner?

The software was downloaded onto my daughters Macbook but did choose version for Windows 7 before doing so. It was then transferred to disk. Not sure what we've done wrong unless using a macbook causes a problem?

Meanwhile, on a plus side, I've managed to get my old PC connected to the internet (hasnt been working since trying over the last few days) so although it's a bit slow to load up it's a lot better for typing than my Kindle :).

Maybe I'll try using this PC (using XP OS) but I don't hold out too much hope to be honest. :(

    If using XP:

    Download and save the image.

Burn the .iso file(image) to DVD using ImgBurn(download and install. Take note to not install the Toolbar by removing the relevant tick etc). You have to Burn Image to Disc, not burn Data disc.

    Here is a Guide(skip step 2b)

Let's hope that you have a DVD writer in the XP PC.

Hi NiftyD, I'm having ago at the above. Hopefully downloaded the Windows evaluation but haven't been able to check as have got lots of problems having downloaded imgburn complete with that blasted tool bar thing! It came automatically because I chose Express install I guess? I've uninstalled it but now find I've got something called Trovisearch as my home page and everything is freezing as I try to get rid of it. Unfortunately this older PC is very slow anyway, now it's barely responding, probably have to come back to this later. :(

Can't find the Windows 8 Evaluation, I suspect because of the mess I got myself in with imgburn I didnt actually save the download? I assumed it would be in downloads automatically but it's not? Will have another go this evening but it's fair to say something is definitely telling me I'm not cut out for PC solving and it's not just my wife :o. I don't want to throw the towel in but it's getting close :(.

OK firstly Ive carried out an up to date Malwarebytes scan which found a shocking 112 dodgy items all headed with PUP optional? Anyway, Ive cleared those and when I went to download Windows 8 again, found I did have the file under Documents :j after all.
So, now trying to burn (or Write?) image to disk but once again, a problem, the DVD writer drawer won't open? Is there a way of solving this easily?
