Was really pleased to see this thread so I've been able to follow the instructions for Windows 7 reinstall with pictures more easily. Sadly though I get so far but I come to a halt with:
Windows could not format a partition on disk 0. The error occurred while preparing the partition selected for installation. Error code 0x80070057.
Any help would be gratefully received. Incidentally this is a long overdue second reinstall having had a constant issue with failed window updates soon after a previous reinstall having put in a new Hard Disk. I have struggled along with it but it got too bad to continue as it was. :(

Hi DCM, I can only say Home Premium at the moment as I'm having another attempt. I found a web page saying to click 'New' and then 'Format' after deletion of existing disk partitions. So far it's got to about 25% on the file expansion bit but it seems a bit more promising :).

I can confirm it Windows 7 with Service Pack 1 looking on a previous thread of mine. Reinstall still going about 34% now (PC downstairs Kindle I'm using plugged in upstairs at the moment :o)

Sounds promising now then...if it was pro/enterprise/ultimate
Then it could have been a corrupt 100MB system partition, reseved for bitlocker

Well it was looking good having finished the file expansion process which took hours rather than the 20-30mins that stated but then, when completing the remaining tasks on the list it came up with:
Installation cancelled - Windows could not set the offline locale information. Error 0x80FF0000.

This is so demoralizing, I did a search for this and there doesn't seem to be an obvious fix but likely to be a disk/space problem which is hard to accept having a fairly new Hard Drive in situ. Looking like a new Pc required after all :(

Did you install from Boot, delete the first two partitions and then install to the unallocated space? How much is/was the unallocated space?

Hi NiftyD, yes from boot and now have tried a number of times, even splitting the disk space to try and isolate what is presumably a bad sector? There was about 950 Gb +/- I think and that,s more or less what I have showing currently but over 3 partitions. Now includes a partition of 128 Mb as MSR (Reserved)? Have definitely come to a dead end now :(
    *used unallocated space also

You are attempting to install using the GPT format. Change to MBR and begin again.

Sorry where do I find the point at where I can change the format?:o
Currently I'm in the 'Install' window now with 931.5Gb Unallocated space having deleted the various partitions.
