Ok, so last year we bought a mattress from John Lewis.
We both asked for firm (just firm not hard) as my wife has sciatica and was told this would help. I asked for the same as always slept on firm mattresses.
It arrives and noticed it making pinging sounds from the off. Was told it was settling and to call them back if it didn't stoop. Called them back after around 3 months and they sent someone out from the manufacturer in Leeds (we're in Glasgow). He said to my wife that he hoped it would settle down over the next month or two and if it didn't to call them back. I then called them and told them I wasn't happy as this was not 4 months and still pinging (loudly). I was told that the rep reported there were no issues with it,which didn't go down too well.
Roll on a few months and the pinging has calmed down, but both of us are getting really sore back/shoulders. The bed doesn't feel particularly firm compared to others I have slept on, so not sure why we are both so bad.
We paid £1000 for this and really disappointed. The girl I spoke to wasn't the most helpful. We've turned it fortnightly as they asked (which was a job, given Mrs Geezers sciatica!!)
What would you do? I'm totally gutted that it's been so poor, but don't think they;ll do anything and say it's our faulty for picking a firm mattress, but this isn't the problem as I've said I've always slept on firm mattresses.
It's got to the stage now that we are looking at a new mattress, even although this one is only 10 months only - but we paid 1k for this one, surely it should do it's job?
I tried to leave a review twice and both times it's disappeared
I'm considering writing to them, but do you think they'll do anything?

Firm is really a matter of opinion one mans firm is another's not so firm .
As to do its job what job is that as it would not have been sold as a medical cure for anything .
Can you prove that the mattress has been sold and is not as described ( that requires an independent report from an expert )
Their used to be an excellent mattress thread on here many years ago that gave much information on the hows and whys of buying a mattress .0 -
Yeah, know what you mean, but this isn't overly hard. I'm very used to firm mattresses, but this had been one problem after another.
We weren't expecting a medical cure by any means, but we were expecting that it would be fit for purpose. My wife is worse than she was and I now have a lot of pain in my shoulder/arms, which I have never had. Only after I sleep on this mattress.
As far as I am concerned, this doesn't meet the requirements we gave the advisor when purchasing it.0 -
If it's uncomfortable have you thought about adding a quilted topper? This way you have some give but you don't lose support. Might be a more cost effective solution.0

Was thinking about this and might do if I can;t get anywhere
Just can't help feeling we shouldn't have to after spending £1k on a mattress that's useless to us in less than a year. It's like sleeping on a jelly when my wife movesd an arm/leg/eyelash.
Will never buy anything like that from them again and would never recommend them.0 -
Did you try out the mattress in store? (hard to tell from your post)
If you have a medical issue that requires a certain mattress, I would always try out before buying and possibly seek advice from a medical professional to make sure you were getting the correct one.0 -
Yeah, we tried it in store. At that point my wife was happy with it. this one does feel softer than the one in store, which was built to firm standard.
I have never had problems with neck/back/shoulder issues, until using this mattress.0 -

Good question, the base can give the mattress a completely different feel. In terms of pain management, even the pillows can make a big difference.
Which mattress is it OP?0 -
It is fit for purpose its a mattress and you sleep on it .
Basically you are saying you bought a firm mattress and its not a firm mattress . Store/ manufacturer say it is then you need an independent report to backup your claim .
Their is no legal definition here of firm .
Sore shoulders i get that from a mattress that is to firm and at a guess it took me a year to get used to my current mattress . I did an awful lot of research before purchasing .
Sciatica one tip that may help is a small soft wedge cushion like the ones that are used on seats for posture slipped under the user pointy end at the base of the spine .0 -
Sciatica, get advice from a physio. I have shoulder back sciatica problems too my mattress doesn't cause it though( hence my typing)0
