It's going to come down to how far the OP is prepared to take this.

I had missed the post where OP said that the suit he purchased was on a rack that indicated it was a 3 piece suit. Apologies.

I Would politely explain had you took the goods elsewhere for alterations, would they then be contacting you for undercharging you? I'll bet they wouldn't and this may help them see reason.

Priced as a suit yes but waist coats are usually an extra and are very rarely needed. I would find it hard to believe the shelf edge didn't indicate this.

Quick google, yes I am right http://www.selfridges.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Search?storeId=10052&catalogId=12151&langId=-1&srch=Y&freeText=PAUL+SMITH+SUIT&x=0&y=0

Clearly it didn't as it seems the OP, nor the many assistants helping him that day didn't see any extra pricing for the waistcoat either.

There's no question a mistake has been made (by the store) but the OP can only go on the price presented to him on the day. There is clear offer and acceptance and the the store has no choice but to fulfill their side of the contract and supply the suit at the price paid.

But a judge may not be convinced the OP didn't know the waistcoat was an extra, who's price tag happened to get lost with all the trying on and off over 2 hours. The displays would also be a clear indicator of this, a judge may decide this and judge them complicit in a deception.

Remember the small claims court goes on the balance of probabilities so it could go either way.

Please remember op this is playing devils advocate and is a possible scenario.

I know paul smith is very expensive . Op did you not notice then the discrepancy in the price here compared to the other suits you tried on?

How does this prove you right?

The 3 piece suits shown are at varying price points - £705 (close to what the OP paid), £805 and £1670 - so price alone would not be an indicator that he should have realised that he wasn't being asked to pay enough.

In my experience shops selling more expensive clothing ranges don't use shelf edge pricing signage - the only pricing being the label attached to the items themselves.

The important point, and one only the OP and Selfridges know, is how exactly the suits were displayed in the store, ie are 3 piece suits displayed on a single hanger to clearly indicate that they are sold as a set. If this is the case then it should have been obvious to both the staff and OP that a 2 piece suit on one hanger and a waistcoat on its own, individual hanger would be priced as two separate items.

Thanks for all the help. I think in all reality we are just going to get a refund as selfridges are making a huge deal our of it and refusing to budge.

At the end of the day, it was their mistake, as they freely admitted, they charged me 720 for the suit but are now essentially asking me for more money because of THEIR mistake!! I paid what I was asked to pay for the three piece suit at the time!! The whole thing has just been a little bizarre! Not been dealt with in the way you would expect a place like selfridges to deal with it.

Thanks again for all the advice.

Look at the prices on the link. There is a 3 piece suit for £5 less than the OP paid for 2 pieces, so could very easily have believed he was paying the correct price for all three pieces.

If it isn't too far then it would be worth going to the outlet village in Bicester. They certainly used to have a Paul Smith shop there, and certainly have Boss, Zegne and many others selling better quality menswear at fantastic reductions.
