selfridges issue

Options
Hi all,

I'll try to keep this brief but need advice and help adapter! Basically, me and my fiancee purchased a three piece suit for my wedding. We spent nearly two hours adjusting it, trying different waistcoats etc and then decided to purchase it. We paid £710 (ouch!) and a further £10 for adjustments to the trousers and jackets. We were told we could take the waistcoat but decided to leave it there to keep the suit altogether.

When we got the call yesterday from selfridges they apologised for THEIR mistake as they put it but the waistcoat was not labelled so they needed another 230 pounds from us!! We could not quite believe this as several people assisted us with the suit and I tried on two waistcoats, neither of which was priced.

The department manager basically told us that despite it being their error we cannot have the full suit for the price we paid and must pay another 230 pounds for it or just have a refund.

I wasn't happy with this and the store manager will be ringing me on Tuesday. I believe we should have the three piece suit for the price we paid for it.

Need any advice/words/consumer advice you can give me for Tuesday! They have been completely unprofessional in the way they have spoken to us in the last few days and I want to give it to the store manager big time on Tuesday!

Many thanks for your help

What does it say on your receipt? jacket/waistcoat/trousers or just jacket/trousers?

Sadly at the end of the day you havent paid for the waistcoat (and surely when looking at the separate prices you must have seen there was a large £200 discrepancy?) so theyre not going to just let you take it.

Just saw you noted that the waistcoats were not priced, that doesnt mean they are free, was the jacket/trousers similarly not marked?

    Hi

The receipt just says Paul Smith suit. The trousers, waistcoat and jacket were not labelled. Just one price on the suit of 720. They stated on the phone it was their error. The waistcoat should have been labelled but it wasn't. We should have been informed that the price wasn't correct but we weren't. We were told to pay 720 for a three piece suit so we did!!

    Thanks for the reply

Was the waistcoat the same size/ material etc as the rest of the suit? If so, I can see how the mistake arose, Paul Smith do sell three piece suits. I'd be looking for them to meet you half way on the cost, both of you made a mistake. You need to remain calm and polite, 'giving it to the store manager big time' will get you nowhere.

Actually the OP hasn't made a mistake at all, they were told what to pay and paid it, the mistake is all Selfridge's. However, that doesn't mean they don't owe for the waistcoat, so your suggestion of negotiating an in-between figure is probably the way to go.

It is common sense to check all items are included on the receipt, whatever the item being purchased. Hence, the OP did make a mistake, although I expect Selfridges will be too polite to say so.

The receipt stated what the OP thought he was purchasing - a suit, albeit they were led to believe that this was for a full 3 piece suit. It's entirely the fault of the store not the OP and he should receive exactly what he purchased at the time, a three piece suit, with no further cost to him.

I believe Selfridges are in breach of contract, mistake or not, for not supplying all items the op paid for on the day.

Offer and acceptance comes into play so it could be argued the deal was done.

However, it is a large department store so the items must be priced somewhere, it could be that the label fell off the waistcoat and if all 3 items have individual price tags then it's easily over looked and spending 2 hours playing about with it could have just muddled things up.

So is the items individually priced or priced for the suit? The later I suspect so the OP must have known the true cost and could be seen as playing dumb, it could go either way.

You were there for a long time- several different assistants helped you- seems like you had them running around.different staff, no wonder there was confusion.

I'll try to make it clear

The suit was on the rack as a three piece suit
The trousers, jacket and waist coat were not separately priced, just one price of 720 for the suit which was on the jacket.
I even tried the same waist jacket in a larger size - no price label on this either.
Bought the three piece suit and was asked for 720 at the till which I paid in full.

    Many thanks
