Tiscali broadband -very less speed for me

I have a 8 MB Tiscali unlimited broadband package which I brought a month
ago.

The maximum speed I get is 1 Mbps eventhough only 1 pc is connected
to the adsl modem. I have checked the speed both morning and evening
hours, its the same , doesnt go above 1 MB. Phoned up support and they say
everything seems to be alright.

Appreciate if anybody could point out how to increase the speed.

    Go with a different ISP.

But the OP would be 1 month into a 12 month contract.

I am already into a contract with tiscali, so there is no backing out.
Also I did check other ISP's in my area and none offer unlimited usage per
month. In my house there are 5 people who will need regular access to the
    net.

So I need suggesstions on how to improve the broadband speed.

if you live far from the exchange, then 1Mb will be all you can get - the closer you are to the exchange - the higher the speed. The same is true with any ADSL based broadband service - only with cable is the speed guarenteed everywhere pretty much everywhere

you'll get the same speed no matter what ISP you go with - however, you can improve the speed sometimes by using the master phone socket and using a high quality cable to the modem - the less wire going from the master socket to the modem, the speed can possibly be higher.

Several ISPs can offer more or less offer unlimited access - but you should really realistically know how much you would download each month - unless you're into illegal downloading of movies, music, and software - then most users barely use over 5GB a month

The distance between my home and exchange is 490m. I did a broadband
speed chck and it says my phone line can receive upto 6.5 MB speed.

Could you tell me more details about the master socket ,and the cable
quality to use in detail as I dont have any idea about it.

In my house I have only one main socket where the splitter is connected
which I got from tiscali. A phone is connected as well as ADSL to the
    splitter.
  • Try Onspeed

A guy at work had it at his rural home & it worked well.

onspeed is really designed for dial-up users, not really broadband users

if your house only has one socket, is your computer right next to the socket, ie. you do not use any sort of extension to connect the modem to the phone socket or the computer?

try an offical BT speedtest - http://www.speedtester.bt.com/ - this will give us details about your IP profile as well - it may be that your profile is stuck (it can happen), which can explain the low speed. Try and do 3 tests, morning, midday, and evening - and post the results here

i'd expect the results would be better in the morning that any other time

I will do the speedtest and report the results within 2 days as I am out of
    station now.

I donot use any extension. Just the cable which came with Tiscali connecting
    from socket to modem.
  • Hey Thisisjoe,

What kind of hardware are you using?

I'll try and find you the instructions on how to check your line details using the hardware that you have - this will give you a truer indication of what speeds you should be getting.

    Also:

    1. If you're having speed queries than it's best to run the connection from the test socket from within the master socket. This will help rule out your internal wiring as causing a conflict.

    2. If you're using MacAfee, check to make sure you've got the phishing filter turned off - this program interferes with speeds.

If there are 5 of you in the house and you're doing bandwidth intensive stuff - be careful! Tiscali aren't really unlimited and if they think you're using too much bandwidth you'll get throttled!

Ive been with them nearly a year and never had any complaint. I was with BT before who in my opinion were the "pitts"
