Well we're rooked in any case, as my temper is foul at times! :rotfl:0 -

I wouldn't know, my accountant does it. I only keep records of when and for how much.edinburgher wrote: »This statement, however, is one that I disagree with pretty strongly. Investing in an ISA is not 'little effort'. As with all savings and investments, every £ put aside is a £ that you have to avoid spending elsewhere. It requires discipline, creativity and self sacrifice. Equity investing also provides funds to growing businesses, helps the economy and allows individuals to make sustainable provision for their futures.
I'd rather stick pins in my eyes than start in BTL, won't comment further than that
I agree regarding the discipline required for investing in an ISA. Happy to be proven wrong about the ISAs as it's something I haven't looked into. My parents have been know to help local start-ups, quite a big risk but often there is a nice reward.
:rotfl: Regarding BTL, I suppose I grew up with it and am now starting to be more involved (parents are getting older now), so I just see it as something I will do for a long time before passing onto my son. I do intend to add a few more and think they're great investments, certainly a not trouble free one.2018 totals:

Real returns from stock markets are something like:
US 10%
UK 5%
Per annum since 1900.
There is definitely money to be made (and lost). As an example, yesterday was a fairly typical day where people got excited about something (in this case, the prospect of EU QE and US payroll figures). Our ISA went up by 75% of my after tax salary for the day. To me, that is interesting and worthwhile as an investment. That, and the ISA isn't even a year old yet! Don't get me wrong, there seem to be at least as many down days as up days, but I can imagine a point where months salaries are being gained (or lost) in a matter of hours.
Mebbe I'm just a gambler at heart
In some ways, the volatility feels similar to BTL folk investing with OPM. When it works in your favour, it's great. When it falls over, it's horrible0 -
I see BTL as part of the solution for us, just one property I reckon would be enough for us , don't want a lot of hassle etc but the £500 a month could be handy to boost the ISA and SIPP , won't be thinking of buying until the next recession though so will concentrate on ISA's and SIPP'S and paying off the mortgage just now0

I have several ethical objections which I don't want to get into here.
On the other hand, I fully appreciate that ethics/morals are entirely subjective, so I don't feel the need to go around diaries telling people off (well, with the exception of the odd cheeky comment to GG)
Definitely not an option here :T
*Edit: for what it's worth, I practice what I preach in real life and occasional discussions with BTLing rellies tend to descend into verybal headbutting contests :rotfl:0 -

Whose ethics are you questioning you capitalist scum, investing in companies that exploit the workers to benefit the shareholders :rotfl:.A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effortMortgage Balance = £0
