Ooh Ed, what a great post! From the micro to the macro, good for you and Mrs E
print that one out, I say
2023: the year I get to buy a car0 -
A back to basics plan - I like that. Also a good tip for reading material. You can get a lot of information from the internet, but sometimes, there's nothing like reading a book, rather than reading a screen. Smarter Investing is now on my possible purchase list (it's quite expensive)Early retired - 18th December 2014

Smarter Investing is great - it's like a trip to a no-nonsense IFA who knows that they can save you money if you have the fortitude to stick to the plan they help you build.
If you're looking for a cheaper copy, it might be worth using a price tracking site like CamelCamelcam3l, some of the secondhand selling behemoths use automated price adjustments to stay competitive and this can occasionally lead to a ridiculous race to the bottom. You'll need to race me for the cheap copy tho0 -

I bought the updated version of Smarter Investing last year when it came out (already sold it on, sorry
). Very, very good read but not really time critical I don't think - the advice is general so I'd probably just buy the older, cheaper version.
Good goals Ed :T.A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effortMortgage Balance = £0

I think he changes his mind on several asset classes in the 3rd edition? So says the Monevator review...0

:rotfl:. I know he recommended short term bonds which I think might be different to earlier editions and suited what I wanted. It was the active v passive discussion I wanted it for and that's what has stayed with me.
As an aside, my pension funds are in a mix of Vanguard 40%, short term inv bonds, a couple of index trackers and two funds which I know I should not be holding. All are up month on month, 4.7% in total (and almost 14% for one of the ones I shouldn't be holding) . Pretty relieved to be honest, I wasn't expecting a Brexit vote.

Do you have any DB pensions GG? Seems quite a conservative choice of VLS (or do the others make up for it with bonus risk?). No investment Nazi here, although you do know that your funds have gone up because Sterling went down, right?
This investing lark can make it hard to choose. Once my ISA passes £10k I'll probably just go catatonic and invest in a single ETF (VWRL) and cash :rotfl:
Mortgage and Council Tax out today, £25.37 received from P2P interest and £25 added to Emergency Fund :j
Lawnmower and strimmer arrived, so that's something to look forward to! Will need to pick up an extension reel at Screwfix when I visit this evening (off work to paint next week, so need more rollers).
Tidy fest during DD nap:- Dishwasher emptied
- Dishes washed
- Recycling and rubbish taken out
- Stinky nappy bin bleached!
- Took pork out of the freezer, making a huge batch of pulled pork tomorrow
- On my second load of laundry
- Tidied the living room

Love the goals. I've realised I need to think more long term about FI as well as my short term goal. To this end I will start by actually finding the copy of Smarter Investing I bought some time ago!Made it to mortgage free but what a muddle that became
In the event the proverbial hits the fan then co-habitees are better stashing their cash than being mortgage free !!0 -
Long !!! day. DD teething, congested and grumpy as holy hell. I love that child, still disappointed that I'm not a super parent
Had to order a new tyre, think we have a slow puncture, £66.04 to be fitted next Saturday.
Watching new GoT, good stuff.0
