All we hear from friends is how awesome all their children are at sleeping - we feel like it's something that we're doing wrong
The wedding requires an overnight stay, was able to book a Prem1er Inn a while back for a fair cost, so at least that part is covered.0 -
Lots of deleted text here ... basically, love, encouragement and kindness will give your little DD a beautiful start in the world. Even [STRIKE]if[/STRIKE] when her parents have shadows under their eyes for a while.

Other peoples children are always "excellent sleepers", "very bright", "have been able to do x, y and z by x age" .... Seriously, no need to worry. She will grow out of it in her own time.

Thanks both, am aware of the exaggerated claims made by parents. Our baby's claim to fame is that she is remarkably confident compared to other babies, which is lovely, as both of her parents are shrinking violets most of the time! :j0

Sorry, lurking again! Re the shutters- would you really use them? Would it not be totally miserable sitting in a shuttered room in summer if it's hot,or winter if it's cold?? Would it not be claustrophobic? I know I would hate it,and even if they're shut when you're at work, the purpose would be defeated as soon as you opened them up on return,no? I'm likely getting this wrong though0

Do you tell your friends that your DD doesn't sleep as well as you would like or do you say something bland like "she's fine unless she is teething"?
I think you will find that a lot of parents are not telling the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth when they talk about their children.
Both of mine went through a phase of being difficult to settle. It passed eventually. Another well known parenting forum often has members reminding new(ish) parents "this too will pass". With young children almost everything is a phase.MortgageStart Nov 2012 £310,000

You're getting it wrong, shutters have slats that move, it's not as if we'll be sitting in the dark with boards over our windows. It's an effective way of controlling light and temperature that's better insulted than a roller blind/Venetians etc.Do you tell your friends that your DD doesn't sleep as well as you would like or do you say something bland like "she's fine unless she is teething"?
Personally I don't talk about it at all, our friends are more prone to 'Facebook boasting' that seems to be the norm these days.0 -
I have quite a negative view of FB boasting. Along the lines of "Your child meeting normal developmental milestones within the expected timescale is not a reflection of your awesomeness as a parent". Maybe I am just a bit of a grump!MortgageStart Nov 2012 £310,000

I know, I know, I agree. It still makes you feel like an !!!! when you're being woken up 3 times a night and the parents of little Adele or Thor are boasting about how wonderful they are.0
