Just caught up from a standing start :):):) sorry to hear about the MB mistake you pointed out on my thread - you only mentioned it on here a couple of days ago, but it sounds **horrible** :( When I was doing it, I certainly made several little mistakes ... really glad for your sake that you've got back on the horse - you're certainly in profit still, thats for sure.

Off now to look at the MB board :)

I have to be honest KC, it has been a real boot up the ****. Essentially I ended up with my money 'in the wrong place' (i.e. bookie vs. exchange) and fixing it is taking a lot longer than I'd like. It has given me a lesson about sticking to the less exotic offers in future. There is nothing long with a plentiful supply of bread and butter offers...

Just back from a B&Cue store that managed to be approximately the size of Edinburgh, but didn't have a single plain white 13 amp plug. Managed to get a daft looking one with an indicator on the back to show whether or not it's working, but seems a little ridiculous that they could be out of white plugs?

I also picked up the cable required for our new oven and a pair of cheapo DIY gloves.

Ooh! I was only just getting to that level when I stopped, so I'd be on a learning curve too with that. What a beggar.

Anyway ... hope you have some good down time this evening, with Mrs Ed.

I don't know much about matched betting, but I think it starts off with free bet offers from the bookies?

Do you have to sign up with loads of different bookmakers to make this work, and how do you hear about the offers?

I'm just curious.... I probably wouldn't do it myself, but just wondering:)

Goldie, unless you try and go for the trickier offers, it's relatively straightforward.

Bookies try and get new customers (or keep existing ones) by offering them free bets for fulfilling certain criteria (for example, place a £10 bet and get a £10 bet free). Using a betting exchange, you can 'lay' these bets (i.e. bet against the outcome that you have bet on at the bookies). You play the part of the customer and the bookie (hence 'matched').

By trying to find closely matched odds between bookies and exchanges to place your initial bets, you pay a small amount to end up with free bets that can then be turned into profit (because you're betting with money from the bookie)

You do have to sign up to a lot of bookies (I'm a rookie, and must have signed up for 20 or so!).

There are lots of tips and offers posted on the Matched Betting board here on MSE.

It's not risk free (as I can demonstrate), like any activity that makes use of leverage to create wealth. For someone who can follow instructions, do a bit of research and save up some cash for a float, it offers real rewards. I've made more this year than I have from all my cashback, survey money and reviewing combined (8 years or so of effort).

What happened to the idiots guide Ed. Cos I'm an idiot and happy to test it for you :D.
A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort

Honest answer? Naff all! I really should get round to it.

Today has been an interesting day. New oven came in good time (great). New oven had a sodding big dent in the top (not so great). The dent is on the outer casing and isn't visible from the inside (so oven 'proper' doesn't appear to be damaged). Not keen on having to take an actual day off to get a replacement, I spoke to @O's customer service people who said that they'd discount the unit by 5% and that I could still return it if I wired it up and it was a dud.

I've just wired it up and it appears to be working fine, it's integrated so you can't see the dent. Spoke to @O again and they have refunded me 5% of the cost. I get the feeling that I could have haggled for more, but I don't like haggling and my main concern was not sending back a perfectly good oven.

Assuming it doesn't go up in a puff of smoke, it's unusual to have felt that you've had a good customer experience despite receiving a damaged item!

Popping out for a bite to eat, feeling very accomplished :D

Wow! As long as it works, and its safe, who cares! Good for you for experimenting :) you deserve a cream cake for that :)

I've finally found the 4% page at MrMoneyMustache, I'm ashamed to tell you how long I wasted looking for it :o so I've bookmarked it now, at least for a while, till I've understood it properly.

  • Congrats on the anniversary Ed :)

And glad the oven sitch is working out, always best to get these things replaced before they get to the point of being held together by masking tape as my old oven actually was for the last year of its life :rotfl:

Thanks RT - our old oven was so crappy that the last time I used it before replacing it - our circuit board tripped *six* times. I share the shame :o
