Removing paint from bedroom walls. Two layers. 1) Bright blue layer that goes plasticky when steamed - vinyl-based paint? 2) Thin brown papery layer that scrapes off quite smoothly in strips. Lining paper or something else? Plaster is directly under thin brown paper.

Taking a blimmin' age to remove, paint layer is quite tough and is taking 30+ seconds with a steamer to soften.

Despite being a PITA, I assume stripping back to the plaster is the best way to go for a good finish?
  • We had multiple layers like that in minis bedroom so the BF took a hammer to it and took off and replaced the plasterboard

Hmmm... Not doing that! Managed 50% of a wall in 2nd biggest bedroom in a few hours. Currently thinking it's vinyl covered wallpaper.

I'm sure that getting that off the wall is a good idea, Ed - I suppose the only caveat is the thing about not leaving the stripper in one place for too long, it'll damage the plaster ...

Oh, the other thing about plaster - I prefer it as a look, rather than wallpaper, but unless its smooth, its whats called the "country cottage" look round here :) i.e. a bit pitted, a bit wobbly because thats how the walls are. Are you finding that?

The BF was almost a week in with an industrial stripper when the hammer came out, he had only managed the external walls in that time. The studwork walls were too tempting to replace and got the electrical wiring replaced at the same time. I not kidding there were so many layers of vinyl wallpaper! never say never!!!!

75% of a wall done in a day, not quite at BF's level of frustration yet!
  • Are you putting lining paper up?

Finished largest wall, will try and start another one this evening after work. Unfortunately will need to remove fibre tape from ceiling corners (part of plaster work). Think I'll need to replace it and then use a few coats of skim coat before decorating again?
