Nope, pretty basic bathroom (though we are in the south east, so fairly expensive area). That was for us doing nothing and paying out for everything - removal of floor-to-ceiling tiles, tile the floor, re-tile the walls, replace the suite, etc.

I think it included the suite that was coming in as well? But we were so  at the price anyway. (I think all told we spent about £1k on the new suite + accessories, including underfloor heating which wasn't originally part of our plan - so at least we paid ourselves £1k+/week to be without a shower by doing it ourselves. ;))

I'd pay myself £1k/week not to shower, not sure Mrs E would approve tho ;)

Ha. I don't think we would've managed so well if we didn't have the ability to shower at work. Waiting an extra hour in the morning to shower isn't a huge deal, but actually going that long (esp in August) without showering at all would be another thing entirely. It was a bit more annoying for me as I prefer to shower before bed, but we managed.

I don't know about any popping noise Ed!

Ref bathroom, I had 2 quotes - 6.1k and 3.3k - but the cheaper one also included c.10m of copper being chased in to the wall in 5 locations around the house. What a difference! We would probably have gone with the cheaper guy, but then my Dad offered to come stay and do it for us so our cost is now materials + food + spending money for Dad.

Both our quotes were supply and fit. First company weren't too keen on us supplying our own if we wanted but would do it, cheaper company were much more "do whatever you want, you're the customer!".

It depends what you're after, you can get a basic suite for £150-£200 from any high street retailer (W1ckes, B&cue etc). if you want something a bit posher then of course it costs more. We used this place as they are local AND very competitively priced for the items we wanted (less than half the price of the W1ckes sale!) - they also deliver. As they are local I went in in person, they were very helpful, gave useful advice, were prepared to haggle a little, and threw in the flexi hose/reducers/couple of other copper bits for a very small charge.

Sorry TM - it's a wee 'bee boop' noise that Tivo's used to make when you were flicking through the menus. Immortalised in an episode of the Simpsons.

In a stunning victory for wants over needs, I have just ordered tickets for the Rugby Six Nations in 2016 :j

I'm not certain it's a 'bee boop' and haven't seen that episode of the Simpsons, but it still makes a sound that I can see being a 'bee boop'. More amusingly (to me anyway) it has a timpani sound when you try to do something it doesn't like, which I like to play rhythms on... It's been said that I need to get a life but I think the ability to amuse oneself with simple things is massively under-rated.

Hehe - it sounded like that to me - maybe they changed the noise? :)

No, I think it's probably what you're thinking of. My brain just went bebop and I thought about jazz...
  • This might sound daft, but how do you go about getting a new bathroom fitted? Do you choose all the materials, then find a contractor and give them the spec, or do you find a contractor, tell them roughly what you want and expect them to source things?

Mrs E and I are disagreeing! :rotfl:

Not daft at all. Not just because I don't want to get between you and Mrs E, but I think it's a mixture. Personally, I generally find a contractor (that being the harder bit) who I like / trust / is recommended / seems reasonable and then discuss with them - it helps to have done a bit of research by then, but I've no doubt you'll have done that already, and for me it's the only way not to sound like a numpty when I'm talking to them. A good one shouldn't insist on sourcing, that would ring alarm bells for me. But I'd also be flexible and not insist on sourcing myself if they can come up with what I want for a better price. I'd also always always always get a few people round and compare what they say - complete pain in time etc but for me it's important in working out who is going to be decent and who is pulling my chain (geddit).

Am sure you've thought of this, but at this stage I'd be looking to buy in the sales ….
