You're right Alex, our first home purchase has been a constant series of lessons learned. I am not bitter about that, but we are a lot more mature now and future purchases will be subject to a ridiculous level of scrutiny ;)

It's the same for everyone. :) I still live in my "first house" which has provided us with all kinds of "surprises" over the years we've been here. Somewhat stupidly it was bought as a project (no one had lived here for years) at a time when the banks would give just about everyone a mortgage. My wife and I had just enough to scrape a deposit together and I wasn't on speaking terms with my parents who know a thing or two about property.

If I could choose again, I'd likely do the same thing but only because I couldn't face living in a semi. However, I would have saved and made the place as comfortable as possible before things became more difficult.
Without being a grump, we can't afford a house in Glasgow that either of us is likely to fall in love with

Our first house will likely be something uninspired with reasonable build quality, 3 bedrooms and a decent catchment area.

I thought you lived in Edinburgh?

I lived in Edinburgh when I joined MSE many moons ago. To be honest, I'm not the biggest fan of Glasgow, it is the city equivalent of children imagining they're adopted because they're nothing like their parents! ;)

Very generous rentals have provided several £££ towards baby expenses, taking us into positive territory for the first time in months. This is really good as it means we should be able to save quite a lot when we get paid on Friday :T

In less positive news, the most recent cost has been identified for the flat. Apparently it will cost £49 to have our windows washed!

As we live in a large two bedroom flat (not a greenhouse), I am less than impressed. It's a combination of being on the third storey and having non tilt and turn windows.

We are thinking have them washed once now, and then again before we go to sell?

I used to clean windows a few years back and sometimes they charge just for the hassle of it being higher up than usual

personally id get them cleaned before you sell it or ring a few people and say you live 3 stories up and have 5 windows how much ect

Apparently new elf and safety means that window cleaning beyond the second story means either telescopic poles or a cherry picker/scaffold/harness. £49 was actually the best quote we got, only other one we could find was £60+.

The dirt is so bad that it actually affects the light quality, so will give in to Mrs E's demands to have them done now. Other than that, yes, next time will probably be before we sell.

Ya iv seen them dirty like that before i guess in that case its not a bad price really. if it makes you feel any better the equipment is self is super expensive i bought a pole which went 5 stories for over £800

the wfp telescopic poles are really good normally clean around the frames as well for so well worth it :]

To be honest, if we were planning on staying for longer than 4 years, I'd happily spend £800 on the kit for myself. To break even, I'd need to clean the windows quarterly over that period (and I could probably offer budget cleaning to my neighbours, hundreds of flats in our situation within a 5 minute walk!) I appreciate that they have a business to run, but it's extortionate for a domestic customer. I'm sure businesses wouldn't bat an eyelid at double that.
