Actually I think that seems quite a reasonable target Ed. I assume that is for both of you?Made it to mortgage free but what a muddle that became
In the event the proverbial hits the fan then co-habitees are better stashing their cash than being mortgage free !!0 -
Yes, that's for both of us.
Downside potential:
I've ignored cost of kids (i.e. reduced earnings, increased outgoings)
Upside potential:
I've ignored the possibility of salary increases, compound growth, state pensions, inheritances, increased home values, reduced expenditures (seemed fair to leave that 'til last!)
One of the metrics I capture is average increased net worth (£/m), it's the main one that drives me towards making more passive income.0 -
I agree with watty, seems perfectly reasonable ... thanks for the linkie to that Monevator post Ed, you and El had already spread the FI virus to me, for which you both have my undying gratitude
but its so counter-intuitive to mainstream thinking, its always good to go back to basics.

KC - have you ever read a publication called Mother Earth News?0

Absolutely! Used to be required reading ... I joined in on the first rehash of hippiedom, y'know. Pourquoi?

I often end up directed to articles of theirs while I'm doing hippy dippy research (self sufficiency, food smoking, legumes, that sort of thing).
I notice on their website that you can buy their complete archives on DVD for something like 20 years to 2013.
Do you think that's a fair spend of £30?0 -
Ah! Isn't it a great website :j:j:j
Though I don't consider spending on the DVD a good use of your money, to be honest. I used to get Organic Gardening mag - that dvd will be repetitive, for a start, and the research and facilities they can call on will be out of date. It sounds odd for something that relates back to old practices, but there'll be modern research about something - like space heating with an upsized rocket stove - that will contradict old studies. I think if you use their current website regularly it will give you excellent insight into the issues.
I'm not sure how much detail their articles go into, thats the only thing - but that probably applies to their DVD as well.
I'm looking at this article http://www.motherearthnews.com/diy/solar-water-heater-zm0z12fmzphe.aspx as an example - its got loads of links to give you further information (ETA - hmm, most of them seem to link back to the same page), and its got 6 pages itself, plus the comments look good.
I'd say, don't spend the money on the dvd till you can't get any further from the website. And then, look at www.cat.org.uk in Wales for more modern hippy dippy stuff2023: the year I get to buy a car0 -

I am not entirely sure it is going to be easy to work out but I will see how I go.
