Don't worry about comments London Tiger, everyone on here is an expert driver it seems.

Driving is an emotive subject and it seems that most folk think they they are a better driver then most.

There are a few inconsiderate drivers on the road, most days I come across them, driving too close behind me, cutting in front of me, no indicator use etc etc, but it's their problem. They probably have a crap life, dull job, ugly wife perhaps they are short and a little fat. So when they get into their dull 2 litre diesel it's their only chance of setting the rules, they are the hero driver, the best and the fastest, sod you and sod the world and they don't care who they upset because to drive is their only escape from what is their dull life.

So when you get cut up, flashed or get given the finger, don't get angry but try to feel a little sorry for them knowing that they are little and fat and a little sad, they probably cry a lot too, pity them for they are a simple folk.

I do find though that driving at 80 and leaving cruise off is a good referance for motorway driving.

The flashing the headlights to educate people... The bit of my post you seemed to have overlooked to make your point

    Which is why I didn't high-light it thus I didn't "overlook" it.

And for your information the flashing of head lights MAY be appropriate in informing another driver that you are there (as per HWC rule 110).

Why would cruise control increase fuel consumption? I'm not saying you're wrong, I just don't know why it would. It regulates a steady spped to avoid using your foot, that's all, unless sudden braking and rapid re-acceleration up to the set speed is the issue, I guess that's most likely, but more on A and B roads than a motorway.

I dont know the answer, but i think it uses more fuel when going uphill and downhill as oppossed to using your foot.

Most people slow down going uphill rather than increase the revs, whereas with cruise control it will increase revs so use more fuel at least thats my thinking.

I can only base that on using cruise control and on the flat i stay a constant gap behind, but as soon as we hit a hill i invariably catch up to the car in front

Because cruise control is designed to get you back to the selected speed as fast as possible, noticeable when going up hill and normally it will tend to overshot the selected speed

There is no, or very little, finesse with a cruise controls use of the throttle unlike your foot where you can gently ease it back to the desired speed or even ignore the slight speed reduction

staying in lane 1 and undertaking is a definite no from me. Why? Because if the middle lane hogger hasn't got the sense and judgement to remain in lane 1 until he needs to overtake rather than just stay in lane 2 because some time in the next few hours he might catch the slower lorry he is 'overtaking' then he is unlikely to have the sense and judgment to realise there is a car beside him when he does finally realise the error of his ways and move into lane 1.

The original post does seem to indicate a fair distance between him and the lorry he was 'overtaking' as he describes the actions of the 'lunatic' as two separate moves. if a car is moving at 80 and a lorry at 56 then by the time he has overtaken our middle lane dawdler the slow moving lorry should be a long way behind.

Also, how annoying is it when the middle lane dawdler suddenly decides to speed up as you are passing them as they realise they weren't going fast enough to justify being in the middle lane to overtake.

I was driving up the M74 from Carlisle, it was very quiet. I passed a middle lane hogger and realised there was a) no traffic ahead of me b) very little traffic in the other direction and c) an almost clear road a long way behind me and d) A CLUSTER of traffic around our middle lane dawdler.

That can easily become Lane 1 -> Lane 1 -> Hard shoulder > Armco if the middle lane driver is inattentive.

Although I admit to doing it myself occasionally.
