I think that's what I said, but more succinctly than you: "They are doing it mostly out of nosiness, or as they would say, 'to give a us a more rounded picture of the individual'". Which is about the same as you said.

Which they are entitled to do, and in some cases legislation actually requires it

Classic scope creep. Credit reference agencies were set up to assess borrowers' history of paying debt, with a view to providing further debt. They weren't set up to enable potential employers to poke around in someone's finances. But that's just what happens now. And it's not only banks. Even supermarkets carry out a credit check on the shelf stacker.

Gordon Hose, your banality is eye watering. Grow up, and god preserve us if you work in the finance industry!

Not really. As supermarket employees have access to money on the tills, a basic CRB and public info check makes sense. Some one on the tills with mountains of CCJ's could be a security risk.

That said as they don't report to the CRA's they can't actually do a full credit check. It's just a public info check. Banks can do a full check and will do every time.

They don't all work on the tills, but they carry out a check on all employees, and at least one of the big four cicumvent government resticitions to stop them carrying out unjustified CRB checks.

Okay, I'll write it in simpler language if that will help:

Applying for a job is not the same thing as applying for credit. Tesco Bank are not carrying out a "credit check" to see if this guy will pay back some money they may lend him. They are doing it mostly out of nosiness, or as they would say, "to give a us a more rounded picture of the individual".

    Alternatively:

Should we lend him money? Do a credit check to find out if he's a good payer.

Should we give him a job? Do a credit check to see if he's, well ... let's just have a look, eh?

Actually it's not nosiness at all but sound financial judgement. It is all about preventing risk and ensuring that the people working for them are not balancing on a knife edge financially.

Yes and why not? Most supermarkets are at high risk of staff theft, most employees will at some point have to till cover or have access to stock rooms.

Why not minimise the risk and see if someone has a bag load of bad debt which could make them a risk where theft is concerned? Common sense and risk management.

I think they should do basic CRB's. I would want to if it were my business. Protecting your assets.

I'm not sure why you have such an issue with background checks...it's common sense in some industries and essential in others.

We'll have to agree to differ. My son works in a supermarket, on the tills. Most employees DON'T till cover and have no access to cash. There comes a time when trust has to come into it. Also, the government doesn't agree with you, having recently restricted just who can carry out a CRB check (not sure about any such restictions on credit checks), although at least one disreputable supermarket has gone through the back door to continue with the checks (basic level). There are much wider social issues about the use of CRB and credit checking for other than originally intended reasons. Although I guess you could effectively debate these issues, a number of posters here are clearly not up to it.

Well I hope you're on holiday today, like me. Wouldn't want you wasting company time on the internet. Let's see, who's the worst telco - there's really tough competition there.... BT, Virgin, Sky. Must be one of those. All the others are bit-part players.

I'm betting Sky. They are total s**t, so a good match.

Hmmm I'm sure the original post said the OP was "thinking" about applying for a job with Tesco bank now it seems the credit checks have been done.

Seems a really short space of time, I would have thought interviews etc would have to be done first. oh well.
