I have looked through old threads but there doesn't seem to be a definitive answer.

Does anyone know if Tesco's do a full credit check on potential staff or a public record check?

From their website:

"Checks include but are not limited to Criminal Record, Identity and Adverse Credit such as CCJs/ IVAs/ Trust Deeds or Bankruptcy"

I have a satisfied default and also I applied for a Tesco credit card and was declined.

I was always under impression they only looked for public record information such as ccj etc.

I think it's public records also, if they ask your permission to see your credit file then I imagine it will show everything so best tell them up front if this is the case.

Not sure if they will check if you have any accounts/account applications with them.

Never hand in your notice unless you have an unconditional offer of a job.

Agreed JKSandy - until the confirmation of then job offer is received do not hand in your notice.

As for the job, if it is with a financial insitution (Tesco Bank) then will almost certainly do a credit check. A satisfied default may not be as big an issue as you think (depending on the role), and your declined credit card may be for a completely different reason.

They can't search your credit file without your permission.

So when they ask for your permission, you ask "what type of search will you be performing?"

But I would imagine they'll tell you about the need for the search in the 'conditional' offer letter?

Supermarkets do credit searches and criminal record checks for shelf stackers. At least, they used to be able to do criminal record checks but I think they may not now be allowed to. However, if this is the case they can circumvent it by going to Disclosure Scotland, even if they're based outside Scotland (Morrisons did this recently).

    Thanks all.

I spoke to someone I know who works for another bank and they said if the employer reports to the CRA's they can pull your full credit report. As Tesco is a lender I assume the report to the CRA's

I will just call and ask them directly.

They would still need your approval to check your report.
