I'm finally getting broadband after 18months of living in my house and I will be getting Netflix when its all set up! I used to do LoveFilm by post but did find that their recent releases were few and far between.
Plus, my new smart TV has a netflix button on the remote so I can switch from freeview to netflix on the TV!!

    Simple things........
  • Netflix hands down, largely because they are taking the effort to invest in new film/TV.
Only hope is that in time the european market becomes stronger for them so that it is not so americanised.

Another one to consider is Wuaki. But that is a whole new conversation!

Netflix is looking to launch in France, but the French government want to apply a tax on subscriptions to support the French film industry.

Netflix have said no and based their HQ in Amsterdam so that the tax cannot apply but have promised to invest in Netflix originals for the French market and already have 1 localised series ready to go.

Two French telecom companies are also refusing to allow the service on their networks without some form of inducement (ie, cash!) The UK market is so much more open and competitive as Netflix has met similar issues in the US where ISP's are arguing Netflix should contribute to network integrity because their service uses most of the bandwidth.

So, as surveys go, we're not feeling much love for Lovefilm/Prime are we?

It doesn't help that Prime shows both free and paid for movies on the same page. nothing more annoying than finding a movie, getting all excited and then realise its pay per view.

They really should keep the two service offerings separate (ie, at least with Sky and Sky Box Office there is a separation between the films you can get on the film subs channel and the box office pay per view open to everyone.

  • i have been with Lovefilm for around 7 or 8 years now. never had any problems with them. having said that, it was a pain in the butt when they were first bought by Amazon, but i've found my way around it now. but yes, they should separate the pay per view ones as the husband tends not to read the screen properly

Here's the legal, straight forward services.
Netflix are aware that people are accessing accounts in other countries and so far they've been happy to let them do it because it suits them, but this is likely to change because of complaints from the distribution rights holders.

(paid for, $4.99 a month, free trial, will need to change dns at device or router level). Doesn't work with PS3, and some routers like Sky ones.

(free android app and browser add ons, works well in my experience)

There's more but these are two of the most popular.

I've noticed that in terms of big films, Netflix US tends to get them a few months earlier than the UK, but they do come over to the UK. I think Netflix are closing the gap between US and UK content.

Sure, the US site still has loads more films, but most of them are dross anyway and yes, they have lots more TV series, but again, mostly US stuff. The decent US series are already on Netflix I think.

Its like DVD's, remember they'd have different region codes and you could get the USA disc 4 months before the UK one, but eventually it was almost released same time worldwide, same with BluRays now.
