i wouldn't be too worried, as long as there isn't any blood in it.

if he does it a few more times after eating or drinking, and he seems lethargic, or not his usual self quite rapidly, it might be worth giving the vet call.

Okay, thanks... no blood in it; it barely looked chewed :-/

He was rolling around playing with his toy duck just after he threw up, I'm hoping that's a good sign... now he's having a snooze on the sofa... Could he have eaten something dodgy on his travels today? Should I keep him in for a bit?

they eat grass which makes them throw up - i think for hairballs

there is always a chance he could eat something dodgy, even poisonous like slug/snail bait, so if you notice his behavior change from his usual, call the vet, they will advise on the phone if he should be brought in.

you know Derek and his usual behavior and character now, so i think you'll notice when something is wrong.

One of mine deposited all her breakfast outside our front door a couple of days ago. In it was a large fur ball, so that accounted for the sick. I hate clearing up cat sick :(
Cats sometime appear to be sick for no reason, then get on with life as if nothing has occurred. As scaredy_cat says, if he seems normal don't be too worried.

Cats eat grass to aid digestion, it doesn't automatically make them sick :)

Lily eats grass and plant shoots all the time and it rarely results in vomit.
