Not at all - but most well paid jobs demand a degree of English comprehension. I am nowhere near the six figure bracket but still had to demonstrate excellent English, both written and oral.0 -
Forget those cheery DWP slogans, 'we want the same thing' etc....you may want money to survive, they want to hinder, harass and drive you away so you don't receive anything- there's a reason why there are more G4S guards than staff at these places
If a guy was sanctioned- as he couldn't attend due to a heart attack- there's not much hope for you I'm afraid- but with an election coming up, contact every local politician going.

How is that in the least bit helpful. There are all sorts of people with varying degrees of education going for all sorts of jobs where different requirements are needed. Not everyone will attain a well paid job even with a great education.0 -

I've worked as a PA to several very senior people including CEOs, and believe me they're not always so perfect with their grammar and spelling. One of them used to come to me all the time to ask how to spell something (why he didn't use google, I don't know).
And we all make small errors from time to time - especially when tired and/or stressed.0 -
Can I suggest to people if this happens to them some simple things to bear in mind. If you get a job interview and it clashes with your signing day or time, phone JCP and explain. They may arrange for you to sign late, early or may actually agree to the next day. Its not normal to change to the following day unless there is significant amount if travel involved.
Get the name of the person you spoke to and be prepared that they will need to see proof of the interview. Why cant any preperation be done the evening before? May have to be the case for some-one already in employment.
A DM will look at where you were on the specified day and time of your signing not that your interview was 5 hrs later, why couldn't you attend at .... time. If you ring up and they state you still have to come in then again get the name of the person and when it goes to a DM explain why you felt you couldn't make the correct time, what steps you had taken to re-arrange and the response you were given. Its up to you to prove good cause for not attending. If your job interview is 10am and its an hours travel but your signing time is 9.30 its pretty obvious you cant do both, Go to the jon interview and attend the JCP later with the proof and no DM will disallow. BUT if you turn up the following day with proof the interview was 3pm and you were due to sign at 10am I'm afraid you may face a sanction.0 -
I'm afraid that it all depends on how badly they need to hit their target for sanctions.

PS. Whenever I didn't get a job, then I rationalised that I probably wouldn't have liked working there anyway. Their recruitment policy is clearly cr*p, so what else is wrong with the place?

I doubt very much that you would actually be sanctioned.
You will just need to write clearly that you needed adequate time for the journey and to be sure of finding the employer in time: that is a valid reason for missing signing.0 -
Well they wouldn't be sanctioned for having a heart attack, but being unwell may cause one not to attend something and not to answer letters, what with being in hospital and not at the address mail goes to, and if the DWP's crystal ball isn't working they might not know what the reason was.Was someone really sanctioned for having a heart attack!? I'm just speechless.
However, in this particular case it would seem the heart attack happened at a medical assessment of some sort leading to non completion.
I imagine those attending had priorities other than "Dear DWP, Mr Smith had a heart attack at what I understand was a medical. when considering the application for benefit please factor this into the decision."
