I'm always naively still surprised by negative responses to genuine threads on the forum. There are, apparently, some practising Catholics who choose to have their wedding ceremony conducted in Latin so I don't feel its pompous or pretentious, but thanks for giving your unsolicited opinion.

But it is pretentious because if they had meant that much you would know them!

I had to promise not to leave my husband's blue suede shoes out in the rain and not to spend a single night in heartbreak hotel. We were married by Elvis. Not a religious ceremony but I do remember every word of my vows - unlike you.

But to some people the whole thing probably sounds as tacky as hell.

I hate to be the one to break this to you but... Elvis died in 1977... are you sure it was him? I've seen a few looky-likies in Asda sometimes but I'm pretty sure they're just doing their own thing - like the OP.

Gosh, so much controversy and judgemental opinion-giving by some for a fairly innocent innocuous request! We actually aren't Catholic, I just thought it would be a nice touch that I had tried to get a non-English translation of the vows we took, in English, 10 years ago. So my vows do mean a lot to me and have been taken truly very seriously, which I think is probably the most important thing to anyone who marries, or at least it should be! So as you say each to their own Tiddlywinks!

I didn't say them in Latin, I know them, they were said in English and were the traditional wedding vows, I remember every word. But again, thank you for your unfounded, unsolicited, judgemental opinion - I also remember being told as a child that if you didn't have anything nice to say, perhaps you shouldn't say anything at all....a particularly useful life lesson often sadly forgotten on the forums. I'm glad you enjoyed a wedding that meant a lot to you, we actually had Elvis perform at our wedding reception so at least we share a musical appreciation!

A gentle question... is your husband someone that will appreciate the sentiment of the translation? I don't mean that in a negative way, it's just that this may mean more to you as the sender than to your husband on receiving it. Some people just don't get that sentimental.

Just the English vows might be enough... just a thought.

Do you know what Tiddlywinks you may well be right! It may actually mean more to me to have done it! He is a simple chap bless him! We have actually just settled on the treat weekend venue, Paris. It really is a huge treat to get two nights away just the two of us! So perhaps a short message in French would do nicely. I did GCSE French so I am sure I can cobble a simple 'Je t'aime' together!!
