Yep, that's the time when a SatNav is useful - trying to figure your way around an unfamiliar urban environment, especially for the last mile to the precise address.

Not essential, of course, but useful. A couple of Google Map printouts on the passenger seat does just as good a job - or better, as it gives you much more context, so if there's an unexpected closed access, you aren't stuffed.

No, but for those who do... with a sat nav it doesn't matter.

Valid point, I suppose there are people with health issues that effects memory.

i totally disagree with you, but as you seem to be an argumentative person I will end my bit there.

I've said it before and I'll say it again - AdrianC is one boring, argumentative bell end.

If you dont agree with his viewpoint he will literally grind on and on until you either log off or he bores you Into submission.

That's before we even get into the sheer tw@tishness of suggesting driving around with a map on your lap in a thread titled 'cheapest sat nav '

Using a satnav means you never learn a route using landmarks and such so in effect you never know how to get anywhere without voice in a box......

I'll stick to a map and some common sense.

Ridiculous. Some family members moved from near London (where I live) to Lincoln, a three hour (or more) journey. I'd never been further north of Watford before visiting them. I used a SatNav on the way up, and could easily navigate back down a week later without the SatNav.

Just because you can't remember a route, doesn't mean others can't.
As to common sense - I think common sense would be to use a map before the journey, then a SatNav on the journey.

OP, as suggested several times, NavFree is a very good piece of software. Get a mobile phone holder or similar to attach it. This software uses no data for normal use (although you need to download the maps first, which takes up around 500mb IIRC), however it does have a traffic function which uses data if you wish. Its not the best satnav ever, but it certainly is the cheapest. It does everything you could ask of a satnav (including showing the speed limit, some speed cameras etc), but occasionally it can take you a slightly longer route.

Whilst I do agree with you, Lincoln to London isn't a brilliant example to use as it's a particularly easy route :p

Only took me one journey to learn it as well! It's pretty much just 2 hours of the A1.

I do Lincoln to Hertfordshire and back every other weekend.
