It's so cold here today...what do you all wear on your runs when it's cold?
The sun is shining, but its so chilly!

Today I was racing, so a running vest and shorts.
Went out friday night for a really slow gentle run and had long sleeved top and shorts on. (But that was because the people we were running with were running really slow compared to my normal gentle pace)

Last week for my normal runs depending on length either t-shirt (for the really short ones) or a long sleeved top and a pair of shorts.

If it gets really cold then I will either put on a long sleeved top under a t-shirt. Or if just doing something short then a thin jacket on top.

I have a long sleeved top but it was quite warm by then end of yesterday's 45 mins and I wished I had braved a short sleeved one. I have looked out an old ski headband thing which keeps my ears warm. I use running tights so my legs don't rub against each other.

That's the problem, you have to dress for how you are going to be after you have warmed up not how cold it is at the start.

you could just wear layers then unzip the outer layer and/or take it off and tie round your waist - works fine for me

I would but the only time i wear more than one layer is when the wind chill is below freezing. Normally one layer is all that is needed so have to choose long or short sleeved.
Even when I wear 2 layers it is normally a t-shirt on top of a base layer. So quite hard to tie that :rotfl: and its bad enough having to carry gloves once I take them off never mind a t-shirt.

  • I wear a long sleeved top and cropped running trousers. It's been cold here.

I'm quite proud of having been out in the snow last week, but don't seem to have much motivation generally during the week. Any tips? I keep making excuses for myself about the cold and the dark nights. I lived 250 miles further south last winter and haven't acclimatised!

Do you have time in a morning to run? People often find it easier than in the evening as things just get in the way.

Are you following a training plan or just randomly trying to get out and run? I find it easier if I have something planned that I am trying to follow, even if I then cut that run short.

Good suggestion thanks - I will try a shorter morning run - I reckon there must be half an hour of something like daylight before I have to start getting ready for work.

I'm comfortable with 10k and now roughly following a training plan for a half marathon next year, though the distances seem quite far (well obviously :) ) which means that each run takes up more time than I'm used to.

I wouldn't have thought that it would take too long. I am guessing that your longest run would be about 10 miles?

I'll be honest I can't get myself out of bed to run before work! I just end up coming home eating and then going out about 8pm for something between 3 and 8 miles during the week.

On another note, I am still feeling tired! Think I may need to schedule a rest day or 2 before the manic weekend.
    So far this week:
7 mile cross country race on Sun
    30 x 100m sprints on Mon
4 miles gentle recovery run on Tues
8 miles @ Half Marathon pace on Wed
    .....
Fri is a relaxation day for def.

Sat planned 5k race in the morning, coming out of retirement to guest for a hockey team in the afternoon.
    Sun 13-15 mile @7:30 - 8min/mile pace.
Distance is going to be depending on how I feel when I get to the 7 mile turning point.
